This season, Hollywood has decided that clear plastic heels, stilettos, and mules are the trend. Every fall, leaves change and fashion trends shift. This season, clear plastic heels are trending in Hollywood, appearing in the leaf-covered streets of Houston, thanks to stars like Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham.

A trend that looks picture-perfect on Instagram isn’t always good for your feet, especially in the fall. With cool weather, morning dew, and slippery leaves, your feet work overtime, add plastic heels, and you set yourself up for discomfort and risk of injury.

Here are key reasons to reconsider wearing clear plastic shoes this fall and important advice from our Houston podiatrist if you do.

The Problem: Trapping Moisture

Plastic is glossy and revolutionary, but it is the least foot-friendly. It doesn’t breathe, so when you slip your feet into tight-fitting plastic stilettos, warmth and moisture stay trapped inside.

Now add fall weather into the mix—cool mornings, damp sidewalks, and soggy leaves. The light dew you pick up walking to your car can make your shoes feel slippery and sticky inside. When your feet can’t breathe, sweat builds up, creating a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Before long, you can catch athlete’s foot—an itchy, burning rash that thrives in moist environments.

Let’s not forget the smell. Sweat trapped in plastic shoes has nowhere to go, and when it mixes with bacteria, it’s not the kind of “fall aroma” you want following you around.

Slippery Leaves + Plastic Heels = Disaster

Fall leaves look beautiful, but once they hit the ground, they become nature’s banana peel. Step on them early in the morning when they’re covered with dew, and you’re a step away from a twisted ankle or a bruised heel.

Plastic shoes make it worse. Since the material is stiff and offers zero traction, your feet slide around inside the shoes. Combine that with slippery sidewalks or hidden bumps under fallen leaves, and your balance takes a serious hit.

If you do end up with heel pain or an ankle injury after a fall, don’t ignore it. Your black podiatrist in Houston can evaluate the damage and help you recover before it evolves to plantar fasciitis or tendonitis.

Blisters, Corns, and Calluses: The Side Effects of “Cute”

Plastic shoes come with their fair share of pain because the material doesn’t stretch, and it constantly rubs against your skin. Once your feet start sweating, that friction causes blisters immediately.

Over time, repeated rubbing hardens your skin, forming corns and calluses that make walking painful. It feels worse when the weather turns cold and your feet start swelling from temperature changes.

If you already have corns, calluses, or pressure points from previous shoe choices, squeezing into rigid heels this fall can worsen them.

Fall Weather + Tight Shoes = Swelling and Stiffness

Fall weather brings cozy vibes, but also messes with your circulation. Cooler temperatures can cause your feet to feel stiff or tight, and plastic shoes do not help. They don’t stretch; there’s no room for your feet to expand naturally throughout the day.

By evening, what started as a snug fit in the morning can turn into painful pressure on your toes and arches. That can strain your tendons and joints. Over time, this pressure contributes to chronic foot pain, bunions, or nerve irritation.

If you feel tightness or throbbing, try alternating with supportive flats or consider custom orthotics. These inserts can give your feet cushioning and prevent your body from absorbing all the shock of walking on hard surfaces.

Can You Rock Plastic Shoes? Here’s How to Do It

Sometimes you want to wear the cute shoes—especially when fall events call for Instagram-worthy outfits. The good news? You can still have your style moment if you take some precautions.

Stretch them out first.
Wear thick socks and heat your shoes carefully with a blow dryer to loosen up the material. This trick helps the plastic mold to your foot shape, reducing friction.

Add moisture-wicking inserts.
These absorb sweat and minimize odor while giving you a bit of extra padding.

Rotate your shoes.
Avoid wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row. Let your shoes air out to prevent bacteria buildup.

Choose your moments.
Save your plastic heels for short indoor events, not for walking across wet parking lots or leaf-strewn sidewalks.

When to See a Podiatrist

If you’ve been wearing plastic shoes and notice pain, swelling, or persistent blisters, it’s time to get checked. Foot pain is not part of fashion; it is your body asking for help.

At DeNiel Foot & Ankle Center, our black podiatrist in Houston, Dr. Shobowale, understands foot health and style. We get that you don’t want to give up fashion, but you also don’t want to limp through the fall season. We will help you find the balance between comfort and confidence.

Conclusion:

Enjoy fall fashion, but put your foot health first. Plastic heels may look glamorous for a night out, but they aren’t designed for cold, slippery conditions. Treat them as occasional accessories—your feet will thank you.

Visit our Houston podiatrist at DeNiel Foot & Ankle Center, and we will help your feet recover and keep them pain-free and stylish.

Athlete’s foot, medically known as tinea pedis, is a common fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet, particularly between the toes. While most cases can be easily treated with over-the-counter antifungal medications, some individuals may experience persistent or recurrent symptoms, leading to a condition known as chronic athlete’s foot. In this article, we will delve into the causes, symptoms, and effective management strategies for chronic athlete’s foot.

Causes of Chronic Athlete’s Foot

Fungal Resistance

In some cases, the fungi responsible for athlete’s foot can develop resistance to over-the-counter antifungal medications. This resistance can lead to persistent or recurring infections, making it challenging to eliminate the fungus completely.

Weak Immune System

Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with diabetes or HIV, may be more susceptible to chronic athlete’s foot. A compromised immune system can hinder the body’s ability to fight off fungal infections effectively.

Environmental Factors

Certain environmental conditions, such as warm and humid climates, provide an ideal breeding ground for fungi. Chronic exposure to such conditions can contribute to persistent athlete’s foot infections.

Symptoms of Chronic Athlete’s Foot

Persistent Itching and Burning

Chronic athlete’s foot is characterized by persistent itching and burning sensations, especially between the toes. The affected skin may also appear red, cracked, and scaly.

Recurrent Infections

Individuals with chronic athlete’s foot may experience frequent recurrences of the infection, even after apparent improvement. The fungus may lie dormant and flare up under certain conditions.

Thickened and Discolored Nails

In some cases, chronic athlete’s foot can lead to fungal nail infections, causing the nails to become thickened, discolored, and brittle.

Management Strategies for Chronic Athlete’s Foot

Prescription Medications

A healthcare professional may prescribe stronger antifungal medications, such as oral medications or topical creams with higher concentrations of active ingredients. These prescription options can be more effective against resistant strains of fungi.

Maintaining Foot Hygiene

Practicing good foot hygiene is crucial in managing chronic athlete’s foot. Regularly washing and thoroughly drying the feet, especially between the toes, can help prevent the growth and spread of fungi.

Choosing Appropriate Footwear

Wearing breathable and moisture-wicking footwear can create an inhospitable environment for fungi. Avoiding tight-fitting shoes and regularly changing socks can also contribute to preventing chronic infections.

Topical Steroids

In some cases, healthcare professionals may recommend the use of topical steroids to alleviate inflammation and itching associated with chronic athlete’s foot. However, these should be used under medical supervision due to potential side effects.

Addressing Underlying Conditions

Individuals with chronic athlete’s foot and underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or compromised immune systems, should work closely with their healthcare providers to manage these conditions effectively.

Chronic athlete’s foot can pose challenges for those affected, but with the right approach and professional guidance, it can be effectively managed.
Athlete’s foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a common fungal infection that affects the feet. While most cases can be effectively treated with over-the-counter antifungal medications, some individuals may experience the frustration of athlete’s foot that won’t seem to go away. In this article, we will explore the reasons why athlete’s foot won’t go away, discuss potential contributing factors, and provide strategies for dealing with this stubborn condition.

Understanding Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is caused by various types of fungi, typically from the dermatophyte family. These fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, making the feet an ideal breeding ground. The infection can present with symptoms such as itching, redness, scaling, and the development of blisters or cracks between the toes or on the soles of the feet.

Reasons for Persistent Athlete’s Foot

Inadequate Treatment: Sometimes, athlete’s foot lingers due to incomplete or inconsistent treatment. Fungal infections require a sufficient duration of antifungal medication application to eliminate the fungi completely. Discontinuing treatment too soon or not following the recommended guidelines can allow the infection to persist.

Reinfection: Athlete’s foot can be easily spread through contaminated surfaces, such as towels, socks, or shoes. If proper hygiene practices are not followed, reinfection can occur even after initial treatment. Failing to disinfect or replace infected items can prolong the presence of the fungi.

Underlying Factors: Certain factors can make an individual more susceptible to persistent athlete’s foot. These can include a weakened immune system, excessive sweating, poor foot hygiene, wearing tight or non-breathable footwear, and pre-existing skin conditions like eczema.

Strategies for Dealing with Persistent Athlete’s Foot

Consult a Healthcare Professional: If over-the-counter treatments have not effectively resolved the infection, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A doctor or dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis, assess the severity of the infection, and prescribe stronger antifungal medications if necessary.

Follow Treatment Regimens Strictly: When prescribed antifungal medications, it is crucial to follow the treatment regimen diligently. Apply the medication as directed, for the recommended duration, even if the symptoms improve before completion. This ensures that all traces of the fungi are eliminated.

Practice Good Foot Hygiene: Maintain proper foot hygiene to prevent the recurrence or persistence of athlete’s foot. Wash feet daily with mild soap, thoroughly dry them (especially between the toes), and avoid walking barefoot in public areas. Additionally, change socks and shoes regularly, and opt for breathable footwear.

Keep Feet Dry: Moisture can promote the growth of fungi, so it is essential to keep feet dry. Use antifungal powders or sprays to absorb excess moisture, wear moisture-wicking socks, and choose shoes made of breathable materials.

Disinfect Contaminated Items: To prevent reinfection, disinfect or replace items that may be contaminated with fungi, such as socks, shoes, towels, and shower mats. Use hot water and a disinfecting agent, such as bleach, to kill any lingering fungi.

Address Underlying Factors: If underlying factors contribute to the persistence of athlete’s foot, address them accordingly. For example, manage excessive sweating with antiperspirant foot sprays or consider using moisture-absorbing insoles in shoes.

Dealing with persistent athlete’s foot can be frustrating, but with the right approach, it can be effectively managed. By following proper treatment regimens, practicing good foot hygiene, addressing contributing factors, and consulting with the Houston podiatrist at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center when necessary,

Individuals can overcome the stubbornness of this fungal infection. Remember, patience and consistency are key to finally bid farewell to persistent athlete’s foot and restore healthy, comfortable feet.

Walking barefoot has long been a practice associated with relaxation, connecting with nature, and promoting foot health. However, it’s important to be aware that there are certain health risks involved when walking barefoot, particularly in certain environments. This article aims to explore the diseases and infections that can be contracted from walking barefoot and provide helpful precautions to mitigate these risks.

1. Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are one of the most common foot conditions caused by a viral infection in the outer layer of the skin. Walking barefoot in public places such as locker rooms, swimming pools, and communal showers increases the risk of coming into contact with the human papillomavirus (HPV), the primary culprit behind plantar warts. These warts can be painful, uncomfortable, and contagious.

Precautions: To avoid plantar warts, it is advisable to wear protective footwear, such as flip-flops or water shoes, in public areas with high foot traffic. Additionally, maintain good foot hygiene and avoid sharing personal items like towels or socks.

2. Fungal Infections

Walking barefoot in damp or moist environments, such as gyms, saunas, and public bathrooms, increases the likelihood of contracting fungal infections. Common fungal infections include athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), which causes itching, redness, and cracking of the skin between the toes, as well as fungal nail infections (onychomycosis), characterized by thickened, discolored nails.

Precautions: Always wear clean, breathable socks and properly fitting shoes to minimize the risk of fungal infections. When using public facilities, use shower sandals or flip-flops to create a protective barrier between your feet and the floor. It’s essential to keep your feet clean and dry, especially between the toes.

3. Tetanus

While tetanus is not exclusively associated with walking barefoot, stepping on a sharp object or rusty nail without proper protection can increase the risk of tetanus infection. Tetanus is caused by the Clostridium tetani bacteria, which can enter the body through open wounds or cuts, leading to muscle stiffness, spasms, and potentially life-threatening complications.

Precautions: Tetanus vaccination is crucial to protect against this potentially serious infection. Additionally, when walking barefoot in areas where sharp objects may be present, it’s advisable to be cautious, avoid debris, and thoroughly clean any wounds immediately.

Walking barefoot can be an enjoyable and beneficial experience, but it’s essential to be aware of potential health risks. Plantar warts, fungal infections, and tetanus are among the diseases associated with walking barefoot. By taking simple precautions like wearing appropriate footwear, maintaining good foot hygiene, and being mindful of the environment, the risks can be significantly reduced. Remember to visit your Houston podiatrist at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center whenever there is an issue regarding foot health.

Athlete’s foot is a common foot infection caused by fungi. It may cause redness, itching, and peeling of the skin on the soles and between the toes. Although athlete’s foot is not a serious condition, it may be unpleasant and unsightly. In most instances, antifungal lotions and powders available over-the-counter are sufficient to treat the infection. In certain situations, however, athlete’s foot may not respond to treatment. This article discusses the causes, symptoms, and treatments for persistent athlete’s foot.

Causes of Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungal infection, often the dermatophyte fungus. This fungus thrives in warm, humid places like locker rooms, public showers, and swimming pools. The fungus may be transmitted from person to person by direct skin contact or by touching contaminated surfaces.

Symptoms of Athlete’s Foot

Itching, burning, and stinging between the toes and on the soles of the feet are classic symptoms of athlete’s foot. Moreover, the affected skin may be red, scaly, and broken. In severe cases, blisters and thickened and discolored skin may emerge.

Treatment for Athlete’s Foot

The majority of cases of athlete’s foot may be treated using antifungal creams and powders available over-the-counter. These products should be administered directly to the affected skin as prescribed. In some instances, oral antifungal drugs may be required for infection treatment. But, if athlete’s foot persists after treatment, it may indicate a more serious infection or underlying medical issue.

When to See a Doctor

If athlete’s foot does not respond to treatment or if the symptoms are severe, it is necessary to see a physician. The physician may give a stronger antifungal prescription or suggest extra diagnostic procedures to rule out other conditions.

Preventing Athlete’s Foot

To avoid athlete’s foot, it is essential to maintain clean, dry feet. Choose footwear that allows the feet to breathe, and replace your socks and shoes often. Avoid going barefoot in public locker rooms, showers, and swimming pools. Use antifungal powders and sprays to prevent infection and keep the feet dry.

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection of the feet. In most instances, the infection may be treated using antifungal creams and powders available without a prescription. But, if athlete’s foot won’t go away after treatment, it may indicate a more serious infection or underlying medical issue. It is important to see the Houston foot doctor at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center if the symptoms are severe or don’t go away.

I’m hoping by now all of my readers are aware that it’s not a good idea to walk with bare feet outdoors. Shoes are a necessity outside, whether you’re running through the grass, entering the locker room, or getting ready to jump into the community pool. They guard you against cuts, scrapes, germs, and that most dreaded organism: foot fungus!

This is a given, right? What about while we’re at home? Your own house is, after all, undoubtedly clean. You shouldn’t be at too much of a danger since the bacteria in it are likely your own, or are you? At the end of this article, we are going to take a more in-depth look at the dos and don’ts of being barefoot in your own home. But let’s first go through the dangers of barefoot walking.

3 Reasons Why You Should Never Go Barefoot

Here are three issues that might arise from constantly being on your bare feet, all of which are preventable.

1. Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that often appears on the bottoms of your feet or between your toes. Don’t assume that this kind of infection is not a worry at home just because we normally see patients contracting it when going barefoot in public spaces like the pool or locker rooms. You have a higher chance of contracting athlete’s foot by going barefoot in the same area as any members of your family or even your guests, especially in the toilet.

2. Plantar Fasciitis

Your feet flatten down and your arch collapses when you walk barefoot. Your plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue whose main function is to support the muscles and arch of your foot, is placed under strain as a result. And if the stress becomes unbearable? Your plantar fascia may become overstretched, which might lead to discomfort or even minor tears. And if that happens, you could have plantar fasciitis, which causes heel pain.

3. Toenail Fungus

Fungal toenails are often caused by athlete’s foot infections, in which the invading fungi find their way into or beneath your nail. Therefore, the same activities that raise your risk of athlete’s foot also increase your chance of toenail fungus.

When NOT to Walk Around the House Barefoot

Even at home, it’s risky to go barefoot, despite how comfortable it seems

First and foremost, if you have diabetes, you should never walk barefoot inside or outside your home.

Peripheral neuropathy, a condition brought on by advanced diabetes, may cause a gradual numbness of the feet. This loss of feeling might make it difficult for you to feel anything you walked on, such a glass or wood splinter or even a nail. This often results in infection and may worsen to the point where your foot may need to be amputated. People with diabetes should always wear shoes, house shoes, or slippers with a solid sole to protect their feet.

When CAN You Walk Around the House Barefoot

There is slightly more wiggle room with this problem if you do not have diabetes. The answer depends on the type of floor you’re walking on. For instance, a house with plush, soft carpeting is ideal for barefoot walking. Your feet will experience less shock when you walk on carpet, which also acts as a cushion for prolonged standing.

However, the majority of us don’t have thick carpets throughout the whole home. In fact, it has long been known that most families spend the majority of their time in the kitchen, and most kitchens aren’t carpeted.

What if we are standing on a kitchen floor made of ceramic tile? There are two different types of forces at work when we stand or move on a hard surface. One is the force with which your foot strikes the ground. Then, an equal and opposite force called the “ground reactive force” is sent back into your limb from the ground. Unprotected steps on a hard, unforgiving surface can increase the stress on your feet because of those mechanics. When you run, that force is multiplied by four.

By including shock absorption, these forces may be reduced. Typically, we refer to this as “footwear.” For example, a rubber sole will partially absorb the shock from the foot striking the ground as well as some of the reactive energy. In other words, even a pair of slippers with a rubber sole may significantly reduce foot pain as you move about your home.

Returning to the idea of “kicking off” your shoes when you arrive at home… generally speaking, you’re okay to do so as long as you protect your feet in the areas of your house with hard tile or wood floors by wearing some decent, cushioned footwear. That is, of course, unless you have diabetes or another ailment that has affected your feet’s sensitivity. In such scenario, it is better to be careful and wear shoes than sorry and risk losing a leg!

It often starts as an itchy scaly rash between the toes or on the soles of the feet. This itching may be accompanied by stinging and burning, and if left untreated, can cause cracks and blisters to form on the skin, leading to a potential bacterial infection.

Causes of Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot typically occurs because of the same fungus that causes ringworm and jock itch. This type of fungus thrives in a warm moist environment where they are able to multiply and spread quickly. Damp areas such as swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms make the perfect breeding ground for the fungus, and athletes who frequently use these facilities and have sweaty feet are the most commonly affected, hence the term athlete’s foot.

Certain factors increase your risk of contracting athlete’s foot:

Having sweaty feet

Having a skin damage on the feet

Having a weakened immune system

Walking barefoot in damp public spaces

Wearing tight closed-in shoes frequently

Athlete’s Foot Can Easily Spread

Athlete’s foot is a highly contagious condition that is easily spread from one person to another. You do not have to be an athlete or a regular at your local gym to contract athlete’s foot. Standing barefoot in the shower when somebody else in your home is infected, and sharing towels, sheets, socks, and shoes with someone who has athlete’s foot can spread the infection.

Athlete’s foot can also spread to other parts of the body. The infection may spread to your hand if you are constantly scratching at the infected area, and to other parts as well, if you touch them after touching your feet. If you are using one towel to dry off your feet and body after bathing or swimming, you may develop athlete’s foot in the groin area – in that case, it is called jock itch.

Treatment of Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot treatment requires the use of an antifungal medication. If treated early, over-the-counter remedies like creams, sprays, or powder can help clear up athlete’s foot in as fast as two weeks.

During the treatment period, it is necessary to keep the feet clean and dry at all times, especially on the areas between the toes. Additionally, it is advised to air out the feet as much as possible and try not to scratch the rash. Disinfecting all socks, towels, sheets and any other items that may have come into contact with the affected foot is also essential to stop the spread of the infection.

When To See A Doctor

This condition is relatively harmless, however, in some cases, athlete’s foot may become severe and unresponsive to home treatment. If your athlete’s foot has not improved in two weeks, a physician can help by prescribing stronger oral or topical medications.

It is important to treat athlete’s foot effectively because we do not want any additional infections. If your athlete’s foot become infected with bacteria, your foot may become swollen, and you may develop blisters and even open sores. If you are diabetic, athlete’s foot may become a more serious skin problem, and for that reason, you should take immediate action.

Prevention of Athlete’s Foot

Simple habits can help prevent athlete’s foot; these include:

Keeping the feet clean and dry by washing them daily and drying them thoroughly

Changing socks regularly, especially if the feet get sweaty

Using a powder on the feet to help reduce sweating

Alternating the shoes you wear to allow them to fully dry

Avoid sharing socks, towels, and shoes with other people

Wearing flip-flops when walking into damp public spaces

Wearing breathable shoes to remove excess moisture from the skin
