People of all ages suffer from flat feet, which may be uncomfortable (i.e.. hurt), cause tiredness, and change posture significantly (over time) and how we walk (gait). A few develop their flat feet as children and never have a problem with them (on the other hand, some only feel their flat feet as adults when standing for long periods of time or doing physical activities). Understanding how to treat flat feet is important in order to alleviate discomfort and pain, avoid complications and enhance overall mobility. This information will provide more details (symptoms/causes and conditions) about flat feet treatment options, including (when and when not) consulting a specialist regarding flat feet symptoms (treatment options).

What Are Flat Feet?

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, occur when the arches of the feet do not develop fully or collapse over time. When standing, the entire sole touches the ground, which can affect balance and lead to strain on muscles and ligaments. Many people with flat feet also experience related issues such as heel pain, ankle instability, and knee or lower-back discomfort.

For individuals involved in athletics, flat feet may increase the risk of injuries. Many patients who visit a sports injury foot doctor in Houston report that improper arch support or untreated flat feet contributed to recurring pain or overuse injuries during activity.

Common Causes of Flat Feet

Flat feet can develop for multiple reasons:

Genetics

Weak arches

Injury or trauma

Aging and wear-and-tear

Obesity

Diabetes

Arthritis

Improper footwear

Some adults develop flat feet due to posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD), a progressive condition requiring early intervention. Left untreated, it can worsen and potentially require surgical correction.

Symptoms to Watch For

Not everyone with flat feet experiences pain, but many people report:

Aching in the arch or heel

Swelling along the inside of the ankle

Lower leg or knee pain

Tired, heavy legs

Difficulty standing for long periods

Pain during sports or high-impact activities

If you are also managing conditions like nerve sensitivity or diabetes, the effects of flat feet can worsen. Proper diabetic neuropathy foot care is essential to avoid increased pressure points, skin breakdown, or ulcers.

Effective Flat Feet Treatment Options

There are numerous methods available for treating flat foot deformities, and your method will be determined by your symptoms, the activity level of your life, and the actual reason for your fallen arches. Most patients experience relief via non-invasive therapy and surgery is a last resort when conservative measures have not produced satisfactory improvement.

1. Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics are one of the most effective treatments for flat feet. These devices support the arch, align the foot properly, reduce strain on tendons, and improve overall function. Unlike store-bought inserts, custom orthotics are tailored specifically to your foot shape and biomechanics.

2. Supportive Footwear

Footwear designed with firm midsoles, stable heel counters, and proper cushioning can significantly reduce discomfort. Avoid shoes with poor arch support, thin soles, or excessive flexibility. Many specialists recommend switching to athletic or orthopedic shoes to maintain proper foot alignment.

3. Physical Therapy and Strengthening Exercises

Exercises that strengthen the foot and ankle muscles help improve stability and reduce pain. A physical therapist may recommend:

Arch strengthening movements

Towel scrunches

Calf stretches

Ankle mobility work

Balance exercises

Resistance band routines

Incorporating these exercises daily can improve arch support and ease discomfort.

4. Weight Management

Excess body weight increases pressure on the feet and can worsen flat feet. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces stress on the arches and improves long-term foot health.

5. Anti-inflammatory Care

Ice therapy, NSAIDs (as recommended), and rest from high-impact activities can help reduce inflammation and pain.

6. Bracing

In cases involving tendon dysfunction, especially PTTD, ankle braces or support devices can stabilize the foot and prevent the condition from progressing.

7. Minimally Invasive or Reconstructive Surgery

If someone has flat feet and is still having pain after trying non-operative methods, then the doctor may recommend that they have an operation to fix the alignment of the bones, mend the tendons, or put the arch back into shape.

Some patients will have their hammertoes fixed before being operated on for their flat feet, depending on their insurance and what type of treatment was used to fix the hammertoes, these patients will compare the price to have flat feet surgeries done. Therefore, the flat-foot surgery will be similar to the hammertoe surgery cost in terms of complexity and how long the patient will need to recover from each.

When to See a Specialist

You should visit a specialist if you experience:

Persistent arch or heel pain

Difficulty walking or standing

Swelling that doesn’t improve

Limited mobility

Pain during sports activities

Foot deformity or visible changes in the arch

Early intervention prevents long-term issues such as tendon damage, joint misalignment, and chronic pain. At times, flat feet can worsen without proper care, making it important to meet a trained podiatrist.

The team at DeNiel Foot & Ankle Center regularly treats flat feet and related conditions with advanced diagnostics and personalized treatment.
Exercises That Help Strengthen Flat Feet

Here are some commonly recommended exercises:

Toe Curls

Place a towel on the floor and curl it toward you using your toes. This strengthens foot muscles and improves balance.

Calf Stretch

Stand facing a wall, place one foot behind the other, and lean forward gently. This loosens tight calf muscles that may worsen flat-foot symptoms.

Arch Raise Exercise

While standing, lift your arches without curling your toes. Hold for a few seconds, then release.

Heel Raises

Stand on the edge of a step and slowly raise and lower your heels. This helps strengthen the posterior tibial tendon.

Performing these exercises consistently can improve mobility and reduce discomfort over time.

FAQs

1. Can flat feet be corrected naturally?

Flat feet can often be managed with exercises, orthotics, and supportive footwear. While structure may not fully change, symptoms can improve significantly with proper treatment.

2. Is surgery required for flat feet?

Most people do not need surgery. It is only recommended when conservative flat feet treatment options fail or when tendon damage is severe.

3. Are flat feet painful?

Some people experience no discomfort, while others feel aching, swelling, or fatigue. Pain often increases with activity or improper footwear.

4. Can flat feet cause knee or back pain?

Yes. Poor arch support can alter body alignment, leading to knee, hip, or lower-back strain. Treatment helps restore proper posture.

Foot pain is a common problem that can affect people of all ages. Whether you’re an athlete, a busy professional, or someone managing chronic conditions like arthritis or plantar fasciitis, knowing how to relieve foot pain effectively is essential. Among the simplest and most affordable remedies are ice and heat therapy. But one of the most common questions people ask is: Should I use ice or heat for foot pain?

This guide breaks down the difference between ice and heat therapy, when to use each one, and how they can help you manage different types of foot pain.
Understanding Ice vs Heat for Foot Pain

Both ice and heat can provide relief, but they work in very different ways.

Ice therapy (cryotherapy): Helps reduce swelling, inflammation, and numbs sharp pain.

Heat therapy (thermotherapy): Helps relax muscles, improve blood flow, and ease stiffness or soreness.

The key to choosing between ice or heat lies in the cause and nature of your foot pain.

When to Use Ice for Foot Pain

Ice is the go-to treatment for injuries that involve swelling, inflammation, or sudden pain. It works by constricting blood vessels, which helps reduce fluid buildup in tissues.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many people misuse ice and heat therapy, which can sometimes worsen the pain. Here are the top mistakes to avoid:

Using heat on a fresh injury – This can increase swelling and prolong recovery.

While ice and heat therapy are effective, they’re not the only remedies for foot pain. Depending on the cause, your doctor or foot specialist may recommend:

Have you ever noticed your shoes feeling tighter during hot weather? You’re not alone.
Have you ever noticed your shoes feeling tighter during hot weather? You’re not alone. Swollen feet in summer is a common issue, especially in hot and humid climates like Houston, Texas. This uncomfortable (and sometimes painful) condition can affect anyone, whether you’re on your feet all day or just trying to relax by the pool.

In this article, we’ll break down why your feet swell more in the summer, the medical and environmental causes behind it, and what you can do to prevent or relieve the swelling.

Why Do Feet Swell in Hot Weather?

Foot swelling—also known as peripheral edema—can occur for several reasons, but heat is a major trigger. When your body is exposed to higher temperatures, your blood vessels naturally expand (a process called vasodilation) to help cool the body.

This widening of blood vessels, while helpful for regulating body temperature, also causes fluid to leak into surrounding tissues, especially in gravity-affected areas like the feet and ankles.

Common Causes of Swollen Feet in Summer

1. Heat-Induced Water Retention

Your body retains more water in the summer to keep cool, especially in hot and humid regions like Houston. This retained fluid can settle in your lower extremities.

2. Prolonged Standing or Sitting

Whether you’re working long shifts or sitting on a summer flight, immobility can reduce circulation. Blood and fluid tend to pool in the feet, leading to swelling.

3. Lack of Hydration

Ironically, not drinking enough water can cause your body to hold onto fluids. Dehydration tricks the body into storing water, increasing puffiness in the feet.

4. Salt and Processed Foods

Barbecues, chips, and processed summer snacks are often high in sodium, which contributes to water retention and foot swelling.

5. Medical Conditions

Sometimes, swollen feet can signal underlying issues such as:

Venous insufficiency

Heart disease

Kidney or liver disorders

Lymphedema

Pregnancy-related edema

If your swelling is sudden, painful, or uneven (especially if only one foot swells), seek medical attention.

Who’s Most At Risk?

While anyone can experience summer foot swelling, it’s more common in:

Older adults

Pregnant women

Diabetics

People with high blood pressure or vascular issues

Those on long flights or car rides

Even healthy, active individuals can suffer swollen feet in summer if they’re outdoors for extended periods or wearing the wrong footwear.

How to Reduce Swollen Feet in Summer

Here are practical, podiatrist-recommended strategies to beat the heat and the swelling:

1. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush out excess sodium and reduce fluid retention.

2. Limit Salt Intake

Avoid processed foods, salty snacks, and heavy sauces that can cause your body to hold water.

3. Wear Supportive Shoes

Ditch the flip-flops and choose sandals or shoes with good arch support and proper cushioning. Look for breathable materials to prevent overheating.

4. Elevate Your Feet

Whenever possible, prop your feet up above heart level to help fluids drain and improve circulation.

5. Move Regularly

If you sit or stand for long hours, take breaks to stretch, walk, or rotate your ankles. Small movements can make a big difference.

6. Compression Socks

Lightweight compression socks can help improve circulation and prevent fluids from pooling in the feet and ankles. These are especially helpful during travel or work shifts.

7. Cool Foot Soaks

A simple soak in cool (not ice-cold) water can relieve discomfort and reduce swelling. Add Epsom salts or peppermint oil for a relaxing bonus.

When to See a Podiatrist

While mild swelling during Houston’s hot summer months can be normal, persistent or painful swelling could be a sign of an underlying condition. Seek help from a podiatrist if:

Swelling is only in one foot or leg

You experience numbness, redness, or pain

You have a history of circulation or heart problems

Your swelling worsens despite home care

Summer Foot Swelling and Diabetics

For people with diabetes, swollen feet in summer can be more than just a discomfort—it can be dangerous. Swelling can hide open wounds or pressure points that may develop into ulcers. If you’re diabetic and experiencing swelling, make sure you’re performing daily foot checks and consult a foot specialist.

Tips for Preventing Swelling Before It Starts

Start your day with a brief foot massage or stretches

Wear shoes that fit well, especially if you’re active or outdoors

Avoid tight socks or straps that restrict circulation

Choose a low-sodium diet during hot months

Book a podiatrist appointment for any recurring issues

Swollen feet in summer may be common, but they shouldn’t be ignored. Whether it’s caused by heat, lifestyle, or an underlying health issue, proper care and prevention can make a huge difference in your comfort and health.

If you’re in the Houston area and dealing with persistent swelling, pain, or foot discomfort, schedule a consultation with DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center. Our Houston Podiatrist is here to help you stay active, comfortable, and pain-free—even in the Texas heat.

Children’s feet grow faster than most parents realize. Understanding kids foot size is essential in keeping your child comfortable, active, and injury-free. Shoes that are too tight or too loose can cause discomfort, affect posture, and even lead to long-term foot issues. This guide will help you understand how children’s feet grow, how to measure them correctly, and how to choose shoes that fit just right.

Why Kids’ Foot Size Matters

Proper foot development is a critical part of a child’s overall health. Kids’ feet are soft and flexible, making them more prone to deformation if not properly supported. When the correct shoe size is ignored, children may develop issues like flat feet, bunions, or walking imbalances.

Key reasons why foot size matters:

Prevents foot pain and blisters

Encourages natural walking patterns

Reduces the risk of injury

Promotes healthy bone development

How Fast Do Kids’ Feet Grow?

Children’s feet grow in spurts and may outgrow shoes faster than you expect. It’s important to check their size often.

Average growth patterns:

Infants & Toddlers (0-3 years): Every 2–3 months

Regular foot checks will help ensure your child always wears shoes that support their growth.

How to Measure Toddler Feet at Home

Many parents want to know how to measure toddler feet without special tools. Here’s an easy at-home method:

Have your child stand on a piece of paper.

Trace both feet with a pencil, keeping the pencil vertical.

Measure the length from the heel to the longest toe.

Use the larger foot for sizing.

Refer to a children’s shoe sizing chart to find the right size.

Pro tip: Measure at the end of the day when feet are at their largest.

Using a Children’s Shoe Sizing Chart

A children’s shoe sizing chart helps convert foot length into an accurate shoe size. Charts vary slightly by brand, so always double-check the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Benefits of using a sizing chart:

Helps avoid buying the wrong size online

Offers a consistent reference for growing feet

If possible, print out the chart and keep it on hand for quick sizing checks.

What Is the Proper Shoe Fit for Kids?

The proper shoe fit for kids ensures comfort, safety, and support. Poorly fitted shoes can hinder movement and cause lasting issues.

What to look for:

Length: A thumb’s width between the toe and shoe tip

Avoid stiff shoes or styles that need “breaking in” — kids’ shoes should fit well immediately.

Signs Your Child Is Wearing the Wrong Shoe Size

Even if shoes seem fine, kids may be uncomfortable but not know how to explain it. Watch for these warning signs:

Red marks, blisters, or calluses

Complaints of foot, leg, or back pain

Tripping or walking awkwardly

Resistance to wearing shoes

Toes curling or overlapping in the shoe

If you notice any of these, it’s time to recheck their foot size.

Choosing the Right Shoes for Kids

Buying the right shoes goes beyond just size — the design and features also matter. Children need lightweight, supportive shoes that allow for active play.

Tips for buying kids’ shoes:

Look for Velcro or laces for adjustable fit

Choose lightweight, flexible soles

Let your child walk around in the shoes before buying

Comfort should always come before style. The right shoes will feel good immediately.

Tracking your is a simple but powerful way to support their health and development. By regularly measuring their feet, using a children’s shoe sizing chart, learning how to measure toddler feet properly, and understanding the proper shoe fit for kids, you’re setting your child up for success — one step at a time.

In today’s fast-paced world, the growing demand for personalized products and convenience has sparked innovation across industries — and podiatry is no exception. One of the latest trends revolutionizing foot health is the use of at-home foot scanners. These high-tech devices claim to offer accurate measurements and foot assessments, all from the comfort of your home. But the question remains: Are they truly accurate and reliable? Let’s explore how these gadgets work, their pros and cons, and whether they can replace a visit to a foot specialist.

What Are At-Home Foot Scanners?

At-home foot scanners are compact devices or mobile apps that allow users to scan their feet using smartphone cameras or standalone scanner platforms. These tools are often paired with apps that analyze foot size, arch height, pressure points, and even gait patterns. Companies like Wiivv, FitMyFoot, and Aetrex have popularized this trend by integrating foot scanning into the custom insole and footwear ordering process.

These foot scanning technologies rely on AI and computer vision algorithms to create a 3D model of your feet. Some utilize photogrammetry (multiple photos from different angles) while others use infrared light or pressure sensors to generate data.

Why Are They Gaining Popularity?

There are several reasons behind the rapid adoption of these DIY foot measurement tools:

Convenience: You can scan your feet at home without scheduling a clinic visit.

Customization: Brands use your foot scan data to create personalized insoles, orthotics, or footwear.

Cost-effective: Compared to clinical gait analysis or custom orthotic fittings, at-home scanners are often cheaper or included in product pricing.

Pandemic Acceleration: During COVID-19, many people sought alternatives to in-person medical visits, and these tools filled the gap.

How Do These Scanners Work?

Most at-home foot scanners follow this simple process:

The user stands barefoot on a flat surface.

The device or app instructs them to take photos or scans from various angles.

The software processes the input to create a 3D model of the foot.

Foot measurements such as length, width, arch height, and pressure distribution are calculated.

Some tools offer gait analysis through video recordings of walking patterns.

Are At-Home Foot Scanners Accurate?

This is the million-dollar question. While foot scanning technology has come a long way, its accuracy depends on several factors:

Strengths:

Basic Measurements: Most tools are quite accurate in capturing foot length and width.

Arch Identification: Scanners often succeed in distinguishing flat feet from high arches.

Good for Sizing: They’re generally reliable for recommending shoe sizes or insole fits.

Limitations:

Variability in Results: Lighting, camera angle, and floor surface can impact scan quality.

Lack of Clinical Oversight: There’s no professional evaluation of gait issues, bone deformities, or structural abnormalities.

Not a Substitute for Medical Diagnosis: They cannot detect underlying medical conditions like neuromas, tendonitis, or diabetic foot complications.

In a 2023 study published in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research, at-home foot scanners showed promising accuracy for general sizing but fell short when compared to professional 3D scanners used in clinics.

When Should You Use One?

At-home foot scanners are perfect for:

Ordering custom insoles for comfort or sports performance.

Identifying arch type to choose the right shoe model.

Gaining awareness of your foot structure.

However, if you experience:

Persistent heel or arch pain,

Numbness or tingling,

Wounds or discoloration on your feet,

Or have conditions like diabetes or arthritis,

…it’s crucial to consult a podiatrist. A digital scan cannot replace the trained eye and expertise of a medical professional.

Benefits for Retail and E-commerce

Footwear brands have embraced these foot health gadgets to reduce return rates and increase customer satisfaction. By using accurate foot data, companies can provide better size recommendations and tailor their products to individual customers. This reduces waste, saves time, and improves the overall user experience.

The Future of Foot Scanning Technology

As AI and sensor technology continue to evolve, the gap between clinical tools and DIY foot measurement tools may narrow. Future advancements may allow real-time gait monitoring, predictive injury assessments, and more advanced orthotic fittings from home. Still, until these tools receive clinical validation and FDA approval, they should be used cautiously.

At-home foot scanners are innovative, user-friendly, and convenient tools that can enhance your understanding of your feet and help you choose the right footwear. For general purposes like measuring foot size or selecting orthotics, they can be quite effective.

However, they should not be considered a substitute for professional medical care. If you have any form of foot pain, deformity, or chronic condition, a licensed podiatrist should be your first stop. Think of these foot health gadgets as helpful assistants, not final authorities.

Did you know that your eye color, height, and your love of food are all influenced by your genes? But here is a fun fact you might not know: your feet can inherit more than just your dad’s size or your mom’s high arches. That’s right—your DNA can pass down hereditary foot conditions.

If you have ever wondered why your feet seem to have a mind, it might be time to check your genes. At Deniel Foot & Ankle Center, we help you understand these inherited quirks and how to manage them. So, let us dive into the world of hereditary foot conditions and uncover what your feet might be trying to tell you.

What Are Hereditary Foot Conditions?

Hereditary foot conditions are issues that are passed down through your family’s genetic code. These conditions affect the structure, function, or appearance of your feet, and they often show up early in life. While you cannot change your genes, understanding these conditions can help you take better care of your feet and prevent complications.

Bunions: Did You Inherit?

Let us start with the most common hereditary foot condition: bunions. If you have noticed a bony bump at the base of your big toe, you might have your family tree to thank.

Bunions occur when the joint at the base of the big toe becomes misaligned, causing the toe to push inward and the joint to stick out. While tight shoes can worsen bunions, the underlying cause is often genetic.

What Can You Do?

Wear comfortable, supportive shoes with plenty of toe room.

Use orthotics or bunion pads to relieve pressure.

If the pain is severe, consult the Deniel Foot & Ankle Center for treatment options, including surgery.

Flat Feet: Why Don’t My Arches Look Like Yours?

If you have ever compared your feet to someone else’s and noticed your arches are MIA, you might have flat feet—a condition that often runs in families.

Flat feet occur when the arches of the feet do not develop properly or collapse over time. It can lead to pain, fatigue, or even issues with your ankles and knees.

What Can You Do?

Strengthen your feet with exercises like toe curls and arch lifts.

Wear supportive shoes or custom orthotics to improve alignment.

If flat feet are causing pain, our team, at Deniel Foot & Ankle Center can recommend personalized treatment options.

Hammertoes: Why Are My Toes Curling Like That?

Do your toes look like they are trying to grab the floor? You might have hammertoes, where the toes bend abnormally at the middle joint.

Hammertoes are caused by an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that control toe movement. While tight shoes contribute, genetics play a role.

What Can You Do?

Wear shoes with a wide-toe box to reduce pressure.

Use toe pads or splints to straighten the toes.

In severe cases, surgery might be necessary to correct the deformity.

Plantar Fasciitis: Is Heel Pain in My DNA?

Have you experienced sharp heel pain first thing in the morning, you might be dealing with plantar fasciitis. While it is linked to overuse, your genes can make you more prone to it.

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the band of tissue connecting your heel to your toes becomes inflamed. If your family has a history of foot arch problems or tight Achilles tendons, you might be at risk.

What Can You Do?

Stretch your calves and feet regularly to relieve tension.

Wear supportive shoes or orthotics to reduce strain on the plantar fascia.

If the pain persists, our team at Deniel Foot & Ankle Center can recommend treatments like physical therapy or corticosteroid injections.

Morton’s Neuroma: Why Does It Feel Like I’m Walking on a Pebble?

Do you feel like there is a pebble stuck in your shoe even when there isn’t, you might have Morton’s neuroma, a condition that often runs in families.

Morton’s neuroma occurs when the tissue around a nerve in the ball of your foot thickens, causing pain, burning, or tingling. While tight shoes aggravate it, your foot structure (often inherited) can play a role.

What Can You Do?

Wear shoes with a wide-toe box and low heels.

Use metatarsal pads to relieve pressure on the affected area.

If conservative treatments do not work, our team can explore options like injections or surgery.

Clubfoot: Can This Be Passed Down?

Clubfoot is a congenital condition where one or both feet are twisted inward and downward. While it is often present at birth, it can have a genetic component.

Clubfoot occurs due to abnormal development of the tendons, bones, or muscles in the foot. If someone in your family had clubfoot, you might likely pass it on to your children.

What Can You Do?

Early treatment is key. Most cases can be corrected with casting, bracing, or physical therapy.

In severe cases, surgery might be necessary to realign the foot.

How Can You Manage Hereditary Foot Conditions?

While you cannot change your genes, you can take steps to manage hereditary foot conditions and keep your feet healthy.

Here are some tips:

Know Your Family History: If foot problems run in your family, be proactive about monitoring your feet.

Wear the Right Shoes: Supportive, well-fitting shoes can make a difference.

Stay Active: Regular exercise can strengthen your feet and improve flexibility.

See a Podiatrist: If you notice changes or pain in your feet, do not wait to seek help.

When Should You See a Podiatrist?

If you are dealing with a hereditary foot condition, it is important to know when to call in the pros. Here are signs it is time to visit Deniel Foot & Ankle Center:

You are experiencing persistent pain or discomfort.

In this article, we delve into the reasons behind arch pain and how seeking expert care from our podiatry clinic in Houston can offer relief and restore your mobility.

What Causes Arch Pain?

The arches of the feet play a crucial role in supporting the body’s weight and absorbing shock during movement. However, various factors can contribute to arch pain, including:

Flat Feet (Pes Planus): When the arches of the feet collapse, either partially or completely, it can result in excessive strain on the soft tissues and ligaments, leading to pain and discomfort.

High Arches (Pes Cavus): Conversely, individuals with high arches may experience pain due to the lack of sufficient shock absorption, resulting in increased pressure on the heels and balls of the feet.

Plantar Fasciitis: One of the most common causes of arch pain, plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs along the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed or irritated, typically resulting in sharp pain near the heel or arch.

Overuse or Injury: Engaging in high-impact activities, wearing improper footwear, or suddenly increasing physical activity levels can strain the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the feet, leading to arch pain.

Are you curious as to whether plantar fasciitis is genetic? Or, is your grandmother responsible for your bunions? Do you ever feel as though you’re searching for something or someone to blame for your problems? Something aches on your body, and you want someone else to accept full responsibility. When it comes to our patients, we are all about cause and effect.

That’s why, when we first meet you, we’ll be caught between the present and the past. Naturally, we’ll focus on the issue you’re currently facing. However, we will also consider who or what is responsible for this development.

You may be surprised when we ask, “Who else in your family has bunions?” We don’t have telepathic abilities. But we are experts on foot and ankle problems. And many of them are genetic foot problems.

Of course, something that runs in your family doesn’t have to happen to you. However, this increases your risk. It also enables us to anticipate and counteract the pressures of genetics. Together, we can thereby prevent issues and keep you walking comfortably.

Bunions

A bunion is a painful bony bump that develops on the inside of the foot at the big toe joint.

Since we’ve already used bunions as an example, let’s begin with this one. When it comes to bunions, you can blame your footwear. But shoes have a negative reputation. Shoes can aggravate bunions, but they are rarely the cause of bunions.

Your foot type makes you susceptible to developing a bunion. Each foot type has corresponding foot mechanics. With each stride, a bunion-prone individual will roll off the big toe. This backward pressure on the metatarsal bone causes it to migrate outward. A protrusion is formed on the side of the big toe joint. You get a bunion.

Rarely is a bunion present at birth. It evolves with time. If you detect a bunion in its early stages, you can prevent it from developing. Changing the mechanics of your feet is important. Sounds difficult? It is simpler than you might imagine. We use a specialized insole referred to as custom orthotics. An orthotic corrects the improper mechanics. This eliminates the forces that cause bunions.

Flat Feet

People with flat feet may also be more likely to develop plantar fasciitis.

Whenever we observe someone with flat feet, we typically attribute it to a relative. “I have inherited my father’s feet.” And as you utter it, you recall how uncomfortable your father’s feet were. He may not have liked walking long distances. He probably didn’t do any sports or exercise at all. And you do not wish to conform to the same pattern.

Flat feet provide an unstable support base. Therefore, when you stand with flat feet, other joints must work harder to provide stability. People with flat feet frequently experience discomfort in their feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back. Their feet can’t support their movement.

Heel pain has now been linked to flat feet. In this case, the answer to the question “Is plantar fasciitis genetic?” may be affirmative. But you need not develop heel pain if you have flat feet. We may intervene in a variety of methods.

A flat foot can, of course, be made more stable. This is accomplished using a custom orthotic. We design the orthotic to provide your base of support with stability and efficiency. It permits your feet to assist in sustaining your activity. In doing so, your ankles, knees, pelvis, and back are relieved of pressure.

However, we also recommend the following stretches for flat feet to combat your so-called hereditary plantar fasciitis.

1. Use a towel.

Place the heel of your foot in the center of the towel while grasping the towel’s ends with both hands. Pull the towel gently with a straight leg so that your toes move toward your face. This should relieve some pressure from your calf muscles, which are frequently overworked when you have flat feet.

2. Go straight to the zone

This stretch targets your arch specifically. Start by sitting with both feet flat on the ground. Now, attempt to bring the sole of your foot closer to your heel by raising your arch while keeping your toes and heel on the ground. Aim to perform 10 arch lifts per set and five sets on each foot. This strengthens your foot’s arch, thereby reducing the discomfort associated with a flexible flat foot.

High-Arched Feet

High arches cause foot and ankle instability, which can result to pain and increased risk of ankle sprains.

If your father had flat feet, you must have inherited your high-arched feet from your mother. Mom was always enthusiastic about her arch. In any case, the higher the arch, the better, correct? Surely a result of all those years of ballet training.

Of course, that’s all a joke. A foot with an abnormally high arch can be just as problematic as flat feet. Where a flat foot has excessive motion, a high-arched foot has minimal. This will result in inadequate impact absorption when walking or running. This results in foot pain, medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints), and stress fractures.

Shin splints are irritating. Whether you are moving or at rest, you may experience a faint, throbbing ache on the inside of the lower leg bone. It might even be tender to the touch. And if you attempt to massage the area, you may sense a knot-like structure around the source of the discomfort. These are all indications of muscle inflammation. However, if you observe discoloration or edema, you may be suffering from a stress fracture. This indicates that you have developed tiny cracks in your muscle bones. Although both injuries are prevalent among individuals with high arches, they are preventable. We will simply have to exert a little more effort.

In this instance, we cannot rely solely on a custom orthotic. This foot type will not gain mobility from an orthotic. At best, it can redistribute pressures so that no single area is overloaded. An orthotic must be worn with the appropriate shoe. It is essential to wear a well-made neutral running shoe. It provides the natural shock absorption that your foot lacks.

Ingrown Toenails

You may not consider ingrown toenails to be a hereditary condition. True, some cases of ingrown toenails are caused by user error. You inadequately trim your toenails, resulting in an ingrown toenail. Would you think that other things are more likely to cause an ingrown toenail?

Too-wide toenails are the most common cause of ingrown toenails. That is all. You can’t blame bad nail clipping. You need not complain about the overly enthusiastic pedicurist. You were simply born that way. And here’s the thing: your ingrown toenails may never affect you. But someday they may.

The optimal time to have ingrown toenails checked is when they begin to become painful. But you should go before they become excessively inflamed or infected. The method for treating an ingrown toenail is simple. Additionally, recovery is a breeze. If it is infected, we are unable to treat it permanently. Wouldn’t a single procedure be preferable to multiple ones?

Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Not all cases of diabetes are hereditary. However, the majority of diabetics have a genetic predisposition.

Diabetes has severe effects on the limbs. They may experience numbness due to peripheral neuropathy. They may have inadequate vascular flow. And all diabetics have a diminished capacity for healing. When all of these factors are taken into account, the situation is quite undesirable. Which is worse? Diabetic foot ulcers may form.

A diabetic foot ulcer is a hole in the skin caused by excessive pressure on the bottom of the foot. It develops when your diabetes is poorly managed. It can also happen if your feet are numb and pressure builds up under your foot but you don’t feel it. It causes tissue breakdown and the development of a diabetic foot ulcer.

This genetic condition can be fought in two methods. First, you should look after yourself. If you have diabetes or pre-diabetes, you should consider this condition seriously. Do not simply take in your medication. You must also monitor your diet. It makes a difference. In addition, periodic diabetic foot exams must be done. How often depends on how well your diabetes is managed.

If you see yourself in any of these situations, it’s time to start undoing the effects of your genes.
Your feet are your basis of support…your foundation. When your base of support isn’t solid, it impacts your posture. Additionally, this instability may affect the ankles, knees, hips, and back. Plus. According to study, flat feet may be responsible for frequent, severe headaches. Even migraines!

According to experts, up to 25% of migraine headaches are caused by postural difficulties. The muscles in your lower limbs contract for longer durations when your feet are weak. Signals from overworked muscles might overpower the brain. The brain’s blood vessels then become irritated, leaving you with a hammering pain. This occurs often in my podiatry practice in Houston, Texas. I get daily recommendations for patients with back, hip, and knee pain, as well as headaches. They have no other reasons than postural problems. I assess these individuals by seeing how their feet manage pressure.

Diagnosing Flat Feet

How do I do it? Through the use of a weight-bearing x-ray (taken while you stand.) This allows me to examine your skeletal structure and how well your foot bears weight. By observing your gait, I can also determine the height of your arch in addition to the angle at which your foot bears weight and how your heel rolls with every stride.

Although I am able to surgically treat a flat foot, I do not often suggest it. Recovery takes a very long time. Instead, I take a more cautious approach by creating a custom orthotic. An orthotic is a custom-made insole that treats the underlying cause of your instability. I make it after a thorough biomechanical examination. Therefore, my orthotics provide your feet and legs with stability and efficiency. This will bring the overworked muscles back to a normal level of activity. This will also help resolve any posture issues that contributed to your throbbing headaches. If your doctor tells you nothing is wrong while you’re in pain, ask him or her to observe your gait. Referral to a podiatrist could provide relief.

Yoga for Flat Feet

Flat feet may make running painful. As a result, you’ll most likely need orthotics to continue training (see below.) You may like to practice yoga in the meanwhile. Check out these three yoga poses meant to alleviate discomfort associated with flat feet.

As your arches strain at your plantar fascia, flat feet may lead to heel pain. These are bands that run down the soles of your feet. Your calf muscles and Achilles tendon may both benefit from yoga’s stretching techniques.

According to the yoga experts at PopSugar.com, these three positions are perfect:

Hero Pose

Sit on a block or a rolled-up blanket with your knees bent and toes pointing behind you and close to your hips.

Use your thumbs to massage the soles of your feet while you are in this position.

Try this pose for about three minutes, then gradually work up to five minutes.

Arch Lifts

Stand tall, feet hip-width apart, and one foot in front of the other.

Shorten your foot while standing by squeezing the toes of your front foot toward the heel.

Repeat with the other foot. Try it for about one minute each foot.

Crescent Lunge Pose

Stand with one foot approximately 3-4 inches in front of the other.

Keep your front knee slightly bent and your front foot flat on the mat.

Raise your back heel.

Lift your arms toward the sky and look up a little.

Try maintaining this position for one minute before switching sides and repeating.

Why We Suggest Orthotics

As previously stated, if you present with foot pain (or head pain), we may recommend a set of custom orthotics. These devices adjust the position of the foot. And this is certainly a significant factor in the start of your discomfort. Custom orthotics, as previously noted, are inserts that slip into your shoes. In contrast to store-bought inserts, we construct personalized orthotics for your body. We create them after taking a mold of your foot, so we can personalize every aspect.

Custom orthotics are recommended by a podiatrist in Houston.

When casting, we shall maintain the neutral posture of your foot. Thus, when the cast is complete, it will reflect the ideal functioning of your foot.

Holding your foot steady is essential. Each foot joint adjusts for any joint position abnormalities or imbalances. If you have had your feet scanned while walking on a plate or a mat, your orthotic may not function properly. These techniques photograph your foot. However, your foot is already adjusting for imbalances in this posture. Therefore, these costly inserts become ineffective.

Not the case with our custom-made orthotics. We sculpt a form that enhances your biomechanical performance. Additionally, we may personalize the top shell of your orthotic. We may expand it to fit the contour of your foot. And we may select materials that work best with the shoes in which you’ll be using these orthotics.

Furthermore, we can assist you in choosing custom padding for your orthotics. If your heels lack natural fat pads, we may remove a portion of the orthotic’s shell. Then, we will fill the space with gel or foam to soften the orthotic’s heel.

Is pain in the front of your foot an issue? Consider placing padding behind the ball of your foot. This will alleviate some pressure from your forefoot while walking and standing. There are so many options when you choose a custom orthotic, including more cushioning for the arch!

Come in for an examination if you’re not sure whether a custom orthotic is the best option for you. Dr. Shobowale will do a thorough examination and gait analysis. Regardless of the source of your discomfort, she will advise you on the correct course of action.

Any changes in a child’s walk or movement might be frightening. You can’t help but speculate on what they will outgrow and what will need a trip to the doctor.

This is particularly true of children’s feet since they develop and change so fast as infants go from crawling to walking and running and as toddlers transition from soft-soled shoes to the sporting gear and cleats of later childhood.

To put your mind at ease, I’ll go through two typical children’s foot and gait issues that, although initially normal, do need the attention of your podiatrist if they persist. Let’s look more closely.

Should My Child Walk with Their Toes Pointing Inward?

Your kid may have intoeing, a condition brought on by differences in the rotation of the thigh or lower leg bones, if their feet or knees point inward instead of straight forward as they walk or run.

Intoeing happens when children walk with their feet turned in

Although intoeing is often not painful for your child, it is an awkward manner to move. You may also observe that your child W-sits on the floor, with his or her knees facing inward and feet splayed out to the sides.

Most children grow out of intoeing on their own. You may anticipate your child’s gait to normalize by the time he or she is 5 if the lower leg is the origin of the bone discrepancy. It normally takes until the age of 10 for symptoms to go away if the problem is in the thighs or hips.

But what if your 11-year-old child is still intoeing? Now is the moment to seek help, particularly if your child is in any discomfort. However, if your child is missing milestones, in pain, or unable to engage in school or athletic activities, speak with your doctor sooner.

Why Is There No Arch In My Child’s Foot?

Your child may have flat feet if his or her foot does not seem to have an arch while they are standing. Due to flexible joints in the foot, your child’s arch flattens down in this situation as he or she stands up. When there is no pressure on the feet or when your child stands on his or her tiptoes, the arches should return. If they don’t, the condition may be inflexible, which is a cause for concern.

Flat feet is a condition in which the entire sole of the foot touches the ground

Flat feet in children under the age of two are totally normal. In fact, a child’s arch may not completely develop until later. Therefore, you don’t need to be concerned about treatment till your child is in his or her teen years, if they have no other symptoms than a flat foot.

Unfortunately, many kids with flat feet do suffer from pain or discomfort, particularly after physical activity or even simply a long walk. The good news is that there are several very simple therapies I can provide to assist with this pain: using supportive shoes, orthotics, and, in some cases, physical therapy. We can eliminate the discomfort even before a proper arch forms.

Surgery can be required to help solve the issue if the pain doesn’t go away or the flat feet are stiff and rigid. But don’t worry; most kids with flat feet do not have this problem.

Now that you know what’s “normal” and what’s not when it comes to how your child’s feet look and move, I have one last thing to say. In addition to being a foot doctor, I am a parent. I am aware of how unsettling it may be to be unsure of what is happening with your child. Therefore, you are invited to visit my Houston podiatry clinic if you ever have a concern regarding your child’s foot. I would always prefer to reassure you that everything is all good than to have you postpone treatment while your child becomes more uncomfortable.
