Flip-flop season has officially arrived in Houston, and as the temperatures rise, so does our love for easy-breezy footwear. It’s no surprise—flip-flops are convenient, affordable, and perfect for quick errands or poolside lounging. But here’s the kicker: that beloved pair of flat sandals might be doing more harm than good. In fact, flip-flops foot pain is one of the most common complaints podiatrists see during spring and summer.

If you’ve ever ended a day with aching arches, sore heels, or blisters from wearing your favorite pair of flip-flops, this article is for you. Let’s dive into how flip-flops affect foot health, signs of trouble, and what safer alternatives are out there.

The Flip-Flop Appeal (and Hidden Risks)

Flip-flops are designed for comfort and airflow—but not necessarily for support. Most are completely flat, offer zero arch or heel cushioning, and lack lateral stability. That’s where the problems begin.

Flip-flops foot pain usually stems from the lack of arch support, the overuse of foot muscles to grip the flip-flop, the absence of shock absorption, and the thin soles that expose feet to uneven surfaces. People often wear flip-flops all day, walking long distances or even doing yard work in them. Unlike supportive footwear, flip-flops can lead to chronic foot pain and even long-term damage when worn too often.

What Can Flip-Flops Cause?

Flip-flops are notorious for leading to several foot problems, and many people aren’t aware of the risks until it’s too late. One of the most common conditions caused by flip-flops is plantar fasciitis, a painful inflammation of the ligament running along the bottom of your foot. Thin soles offer no shock absorption, making every step feel like a jolt to your heel, aggravating this condition.

Another frequent issue caused by flip-flops is heel spurs, which are calcium deposits that form on the heel bone due to repetitive stress. With no cushioning, the heel bears the brunt of the force, and over time, this can lead to these painful bone spurs.

Tendonitis is also a concern, particularly with the Achilles tendon and other foot tendons. The lack of support can lead to tendon inflammation, especially for those who already have a history of foot problems or spend too much time in flip-flops.

Blisters and calluses are other common complaints. The thin straps on many flip-flops rub against the skin, and with minimal soles, feet are exposed to heat and rough pavement. Over time, this can result in painful blisters and thickened skin.

Additionally, repeated toe gripping to keep the flip-flops from slipping off can lead to toe deformities like hammer toes or bunions. The constant bending of the toes to hold the flip-flop in place puts strain on the joints, which can cause them to misalign over time.

Who’s Most at Risk?

Certain groups should be extra cautious about flip-flop dangers. People with flat feet or high arches are particularly vulnerable to discomfort from flip-flops due to the lack of support these shoes offer. Diabetics, who often experience decreased sensation in their feet, are also at risk for unnoticed injuries caused by flip-flops. Children and teens, still developing structurally, may be more prone to developing foot issues if they wear flip-flops too often. Older adults are another group that should be careful, as the lack of support increases the risk of falls and instability.

Wearing flat sandals without support can worsen existing foot issues or cause new ones to develop quickly. If you fit into any of these categories, it’s important to consider alternative footwear options that provide more support and comfort for your feet.

When Flip-Flops Might Be Okay

That being said, flip-flops aren’t always the enemy. There are times when it’s perfectly fine to wear them. For instance, short-term use such as walking on the beach, by the pool, or in a public shower is usually fine. In these cases, flip-flops serve a hygienic purpose, keeping your feet protected from germs and bacteria.

Orthopedic flip-flops are another option. These versions include arch support, heel cups, and cushioning to make them more foot-friendly. They provide a better alternative for those who are attached to flip-flops but want a healthier option.

For post-pedicure or indoor wear, flip-flops are also appropriate. These situations involve less walking and less risk of foot strain, making it a more reasonable use for your favorite pair of sandals.

However, when it comes to daily wear or long walks, flip-flops should be avoided.

What to Look for in a Better Flip-Flop

If you can’t give up your warm-weather footwear, it’s important to choose a flip-flop that offers more support. The best flip-flops will have built-in arch support that mimics your foot’s natural shape, a firm sole that you can’t easily bend in half, and a deep heel cup to help stabilize your heel. Wide straps can reduce the risk of blisters and offer more stability, while durable materials like rubber or EVA foam provide better shock absorption for your feet.

Brands like Vionic, Birkenstock, and OOFOS are popular choices that offer podiatrist-approved flip-flops. These designs balance comfort, support, and style, making them a safer alternative for flip-flop lovers.

At DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center, we often see a spike in heel pain, arch fatigue, and flip-flops foot pain during spring and summer. Houstonians love their casual footwear, but your Houston Foot Doctor recommends moderation. Wearing flip-flops for extended periods—especially for activities like walking, standing, or running errands—can lead to avoidable foot problems.

If you’re experiencing persistent heel or arch pain, burning or tingling in the ball of your foot, or pain that worsens with walking or standing, it might be time to trade in those flimsy flip-flops for something more supportive—and schedule a checkup.

As we step into March, a month that signals the transition from winter to spring, it’s the perfect time to prioritize foot health. Warmer temperatures mean more outdoor activities, changes in footwear, and increased risks of common foot conditions. Additionally, March is recognized for National Nutrition Month, which highlights the role of diet in overall health, including foot wellness. Whether you’re an athlete, a diabetic patient, or someone simply looking to maintain healthy feet, this guide will provide essential tips to keep your feet in top condition this season.

1. Transitioning Footwear for Spring

With the weather warming up, many people switch from boots and closed-toe shoes to sandals and lighter footwear. While this change brings comfort, it can also expose your feet to potential issues:

Arch Support Matters: Avoid flimsy flip-flops that lack arch support, as they can lead to heel pain and plantar fasciitis.

Proper Fit is Key: Make sure your spring shoes fit well to prevent blisters, corns, and calluses.

Moisturization & Sun Protection: Keep your feet moisturized to prevent dry, cracked heels and apply sunscreen when wearing open-toed footwear.

2. Addressing Common Foot Problems Post-Winter

Winter can take a toll on foot health, leading to dryness, cracked heels, and fungal infections due to prolonged moisture in closed shoes. To recover:

Exfoliate and Moisturize: Remove dead skin and use a hydrating cream to restore moisture.

Check for Fungal Infections: Athlete’s foot and toenail fungus are common after winter. If you notice itching, redness, or discoloration, consult a podiatrist for proper treatment.

Trim Your Nails Properly: Cut nails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails, which are more common when wearing tight shoes during winter.

3. Managing Foot Pain for Active Lifestyles

As people engage in more outdoor activities, such as running, hiking, and sports, foot pain and injuries become more prevalent. Here’s how to stay active without harming your feet:

Gradual Increase in Activity: Avoid sudden spikes in physical activity to prevent stress fractures and Achilles tendonitis.

Wear the Right Shoes: Invest in supportive sneakers with proper cushioning to absorb impact.

Stretching & Strengthening: Incorporate foot stretches and exercises to improve flexibility and reduce the risk of plantar fasciitis.

4. Diabetes and Foot Care Awareness

March is an excellent time for diabetic patients to reassess their foot health. Diabetes increases the risk of foot ulcers, infections, and nerve damage (neuropathy). Essential tips for diabetic foot care include:

Daily Foot Inspections: Check for cuts, sores, or changes in color and temperature.

Moisturize, but Avoid Between Toes: Prevent fungal infections by keeping the area between your toes dry.

Regular Podiatry Visits: Schedule check-ups to address any concerns before they develop into serious complications.

5. The Link Between Nutrition and Foot Health

March’s National Nutrition Month reminds us that diet plays a crucial role in maintaining strong bones, healthy circulation, and preventing foot-related conditions like gout and osteoporosis. Consider:

Calcium & Vitamin D: Strengthen bones and prevent stress fractures by consuming dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods: Reduce joint pain and swelling with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and walnuts.

Hydration: Prevent foot cramps and swelling by drinking enough water throughout the day.

6. Spring Cleaning Your Footwear

March is also a great time to declutter and inspect your shoes. Old, worn-out shoes can contribute to foot pain and injuries. Here’s how to refresh your footwear:

Check for Wear and Tear: Replace running shoes every 300–500 miles to maintain optimal support.

Clean and Disinfect: Wash shoes regularly and use antifungal sprays to prevent infections.

Rotate Your Shoes: Avoid wearing the same pair every day to allow them to air out and maintain their structure.

7. When to See a Podiatrist

Ignoring minor foot problems can lead to serious conditions over time. See a podiatrist if you experience:

Persistent heel or arch pain

Swelling or redness that doesn’t improve

Ingrown toenails that cause pain or infection

Changes in skin texture, color, or temperature

March is the perfect month to focus on foot health as we transition into spring. By making small adjustments, such as wearing supportive footwear, maintaining good hygiene, and being mindful of nutrition, you can prevent common foot problems and enjoy the season pain-free. If you have persistent foot concerns, schedule an appointment with DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center, where expert care ensures your feet remain healthy all year round.

Certain populations are particularly susceptible to these troublesome infections, often necessitating specialized care for effective treatment and prevention. In this comprehensive exploration, we’ll examine the demographics most prone to toe ingrown infections and discuss expert solutions available for managing this condition.

Identifying Those Prone to Toe Ingrown Infections

Toe ingrown infections occur when an ingrown toenail becomes inflamed, infected, or develops into a more serious condition. While anyone can develop an ingrown toenail, certain factors increase the risk of experiencing an infection:

Ingrown toenails are a common consequence of diabetes-induced foot issues.

Individuals with Diabetes: Diabetes compromises foot circulation and nerve function, heightening susceptibility to infections, including those from ingrown toenails. Diabetic neuropathy further reduces sensation, making early detection challenging. Slower wound healing exacerbates complications, emphasizing the need for meticulous foot care.

Engaging in high-impact sports like running significantly increases the risk of nail trauma and ingrowth.

Athletes: Repetitive stress and tight footwear in sports contribute to ingrown toenails and infections. High-impact activities like running increase the risk of nail trauma and ingrowth. Proper footwear, foot inspections, and padding are crucial for prevention and management.

The Elderly: Age-related changes make older adults prone to ingrown toenails. Thicker, brittle nails and reduced flexibility increase the likelihood of ingrowth. Decreased circulation and slower healing raise infection risks. Regular foot care, including gentle nail trimming and infection monitoring, is essential for maintaining foot health.

Infected ingrown toenails, a common foot ailment, can quickly escalate from discomfort to debilitating pain if left untreated. This condition occurs when the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin, leading to inflammation, infection, and excruciating discomfort. However, with proper understanding and timely intervention, individuals suffering from this condition can find relief and restore their foot health. In this article, we delve into the causes, symptoms, treatment options, and preventive measures for infected ingrown toenails.

Understanding Infected Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail develops when the edge of the toenail curves and pierces the adjacent skin, triggering pain, redness, swelling, and in severe cases, infection.

Causes include improper nail trimming, tight-fitting shoes, injury, or naturally curved toenails.

Symptoms of Infected Ingrown Toenails

Throbbing pain

Redness

Swelling

Warmth

Pus drainage

Fever and chills in severe cases

Treatment Options

Home care: soaking the foot in warm water and gently lifting the nail can provide temporary relief from discomfort associated with ingrown toenails.

Professional intervention: For persistent or severe cases, seeking the expertise at a specialized clinic is paramount. They offer a range of treatment options tailored to individual needs, including:

Ingrown toenail removal: This minor surgical procedure, performed under local anesthesia, involves the careful removal or trimming of the offending portion of the nail. This alleviates pressure on the surrounding tissue and promotes healing.

Toe nail ingrowth treatment: Beyond simply removing the ingrown nail, foot specialists address the underlying causes to prevent recurrence. This may involve reshaping the nail or applying special devices to encourage proper growth.

Antibiotics: In cases where infection is present, antibiotics may be prescribed to combat the nail ingrown infection and promote healing.

Preventive Measures

Ensuring foot health involves preventive measures like proper nail trimming and wearing well-fitted shoes. Consistent foot hygiene is vital. In the event of ingrown toenails, timely intervention with ingrown treatment is essential.

Proper nail trimming techniques: Cut nails straight across and avoid rounding the edges to reduce the risk of ingrowth.

Wearing well-fitted shoes: Choose footwear with ample toe room to minimize pressure on the toes and prevent ingrown nails.

Regular foot hygiene: Keep feet clean and dry to prevent fungal infections and reduce the likelihood of ingrown toenails.

Infected ingrown toenails pose a significant challenge for individuals, causing pain, discomfort, and potential complications if left untreated. However, with timely intervention and expert care from the Houston foot doctor, at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center., relief is within reach.
Dealing with an ingrown toenail is not only painful but can also be a tricky task if not handled correctly. Many people attempt to trim ingrown nails at home, but when done improperly, it can lead to more pain and complications. In such cases, it’s essential to seek professional help from a podiatrist, who can provide a painless and permanent solution. In this article, we will explore what can happen when you cut your ingrown toenail wrong and how a podiatrist can help.

The Risks of DIY Ingrown Toenail Care

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing redness, swelling, and intense pain. While some may try to alleviate the discomfort by cutting the nail themselves, there are inherent risks:

Infection: Incorrect trimming can introduce bacteria, leading to infection and pus formation.

Increased Pain: Amateur attempts can exacerbate the problem, making the ingrown nail more painful.

Recurrence: Self-trimming often results in temporary relief, but the issue frequently recurs.

The Expertise of a Podiatrist

Podiatrists are trained specialists who can provide professional care for ingrown toenails. Here’s how they can help:

Accurate Diagnosis: Podiatrists can determine the severity of the ingrown toenail and identify any underlying issues contributing to the problem.

Pain Management: Before any procedure, podiatrists will ensure your comfort by administering local anesthesia to numb the affected toe.

Painless Removal: The podiatrist will painlessly remove the ingrown nail by trimming or, in severe cases, performing a partial nail avulsion. This is a quick and relatively painless procedure that removes a portion of the nail.

Preventing Recurrence: A podiatrist will offer advice on preventing ingrown toenails in the future, including proper nail trimming techniques, footwear recommendations, and lifestyle adjustments.

Treatment of Complications: If an infection has developed, a podiatrist can prescribe antibiotics to address it effectively.

Permanent Solutions: In some cases, a podiatrist may recommend a permanent procedure called a matrixectomy. This involves removing the nail matrix, preventing the ingrown nail from regrowing. This is a highly effective solution for recurrent ingrown toenails.

Cutting your ingrown toenail wrong can worsen the problem and lead to increased pain and potential infection. It’s crucial to seek professional help from a podiatrist for a painless and permanent solution. With their expertise, podiatrists can provide accurate diagnosis, pain management, and tailored treatments to ensure that you not only find relief from the immediate discomfort but also prevent the recurrence of ingrown toenails in the future.

Don’t endure unnecessary pain; consult the Houston foot doctor at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center for expert care and get back on your feet pain-free.

Properly fitting shoes are essential for maintaining foot health and overall comfort. However, wearing shoes that are too small can lead to a range of health issues and discomfort. In this article, we explore the risks associated with wearing shoes that are too small and provide solutions to help you find the right fit for your feet.

1. Foot Deformities

Wearing shoes that are too small can contribute to the development of foot deformities over time. The constant pressure and compression on the toes can lead to conditions such as bunions, hammertoes, and corns. These conditions cause pain, inflammation, and can impact your ability to walk comfortably.

Solution: It is crucial to wear shoes that provide adequate room for your toes to move freely. Opt for footwear with a wider toe box and sufficient arch support to maintain proper foot alignment and reduce the risk of deformities.

2. Ingrown Toenails

Tight shoes can exert pressure on the toenails, causing them to grow into the surrounding skin. This painful condition is known as an ingrown toenail and can lead to infection if not properly treated. Ingrown toenails may cause redness, swelling, and increased sensitivity in the affected toe.

Solution: Choose shoes that allow enough space for your toes to wiggle and avoid styles with narrow or pointed toe boxes. Proper toenail trimming techniques, such as cutting straight across and not too short, can also help prevent ingrown toenails.

3. Corns and Calluses

Ill-fitting shoes can create friction and pressure points on the feet, leading to the development of corns and calluses. Corns are thickened areas of skin that form on the toes, while calluses develop on the soles of the feet. Both conditions can be painful and make walking uncomfortable.

Solution: Opt for shoes that have enough room to accommodate the natural contours of your feet, reducing friction and pressure. Regular exfoliation and moisturizing of the feet can also help prevent the formation of corns and calluses.

4. Foot Pain and Discomfort

Wearing shoes that are too small can cause general foot pain and discomfort. The constriction and lack of proper support can result in conditions like plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of the foot), and arch pain. These conditions can significantly impact your daily activities and overall well-being.

Solution: Invest in shoes that offer sufficient cushioning, arch support, and a proper fit. Consider getting your feet measured regularly to ensure you are wearing the correct shoe size. If you experience persistent foot pain, consult a podiatrist for a professional evaluation and personalized treatment recommendations.

5. Reduced Circulation and Nerve Compression

Tight-fitting shoes can restrict blood circulation and compress nerves in the feet. Prolonged compression may lead to numbness, tingling, and even nerve damage. Reduced blood flow can also result in cold feet, discoloration, and increased vulnerability to foot infections.

Solution: Wear shoes that allow for proper circulation and do not compress your feet. Avoid tight straps, laces, or buckles that constrict blood flow. Regularly check your feet for any signs of decreased sensation or discoloration, and consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns.

Wearing shoes that are too small can have detrimental effects on foot health and overall comfort. Prioritize finding footwear that provides adequate space, support, and cushioning to maintain the health and well-being of your feet. When in doubt, consult with your Houston podiatrist at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center for guidance on proper shoe fitting and any necessary treatment for existing foot conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wearing too small shoes bad for you?

Yes, wearing shoes that are too small can cause various foot problems, including blisters, corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, and even long-term issues like bunions or hammertoes. It also leads to pain and discomfort that can affect your posture and mobility.

What happens if you wear shoes one size too small?

Wearing shoes one size too small can result in cramped toes, reduced circulation, and increased pressure on your feet. This can lead to foot pain, swelling, bruised toenails, and the development of conditions like Morton’s neuroma or stress fractures.

What happens if you wear shoes that are not your size?

Shoes that are too tight can cause discomfort and foot deformities, while oversized shoes can lead to instability, blisters, and muscle strain from compensating for the lack of support. Both can negatively affect your gait and overall foot health.

Is it bad to wear the wrong size shoes?

Yes, wearing the wrong size shoes can cause foot pain, deformities, and injuries. Ill-fitting shoes, whether too small or too big, can affect your balance, increase your risk of falls, and contribute to chronic foot problems over time. Always choose shoes that fit properly to support foot health.

Are you curious as to whether plantar fasciitis is genetic? Or, is your grandmother responsible for your bunions? Do you ever feel as though you’re searching for something or someone to blame for your problems? Something aches on your body, and you want someone else to accept full responsibility. When it comes to our patients, we are all about cause and effect.

That’s why, when we first meet you, we’ll be caught between the present and the past. Naturally, we’ll focus on the issue you’re currently facing. However, we will also consider who or what is responsible for this development.

You may be surprised when we ask, “Who else in your family has bunions?” We don’t have telepathic abilities. But we are experts on foot and ankle problems. And many of them are genetic foot problems.

Of course, something that runs in your family doesn’t have to happen to you. However, this increases your risk. It also enables us to anticipate and counteract the pressures of genetics. Together, we can thereby prevent issues and keep you walking comfortably.

Bunions

A bunion is a painful bony bump that develops on the inside of the foot at the big toe joint.

Since we’ve already used bunions as an example, let’s begin with this one. When it comes to bunions, you can blame your footwear. But shoes have a negative reputation. Shoes can aggravate bunions, but they are rarely the cause of bunions.

Your foot type makes you susceptible to developing a bunion. Each foot type has corresponding foot mechanics. With each stride, a bunion-prone individual will roll off the big toe. This backward pressure on the metatarsal bone causes it to migrate outward. A protrusion is formed on the side of the big toe joint. You get a bunion.

Rarely is a bunion present at birth. It evolves with time. If you detect a bunion in its early stages, you can prevent it from developing. Changing the mechanics of your feet is important. Sounds difficult? It is simpler than you might imagine. We use a specialized insole referred to as custom orthotics. An orthotic corrects the improper mechanics. This eliminates the forces that cause bunions.

Flat Feet

People with flat feet may also be more likely to develop plantar fasciitis.

Whenever we observe someone with flat feet, we typically attribute it to a relative. “I have inherited my father’s feet.” And as you utter it, you recall how uncomfortable your father’s feet were. He may not have liked walking long distances. He probably didn’t do any sports or exercise at all. And you do not wish to conform to the same pattern.

Flat feet provide an unstable support base. Therefore, when you stand with flat feet, other joints must work harder to provide stability. People with flat feet frequently experience discomfort in their feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back. Their feet can’t support their movement.

Heel pain has now been linked to flat feet. In this case, the answer to the question “Is plantar fasciitis genetic?” may be affirmative. But you need not develop heel pain if you have flat feet. We may intervene in a variety of methods.

A flat foot can, of course, be made more stable. This is accomplished using a custom orthotic. We design the orthotic to provide your base of support with stability and efficiency. It permits your feet to assist in sustaining your activity. In doing so, your ankles, knees, pelvis, and back are relieved of pressure.

However, we also recommend the following stretches for flat feet to combat your so-called hereditary plantar fasciitis.

1. Use a towel.

Place the heel of your foot in the center of the towel while grasping the towel’s ends with both hands. Pull the towel gently with a straight leg so that your toes move toward your face. This should relieve some pressure from your calf muscles, which are frequently overworked when you have flat feet.

2. Go straight to the zone

This stretch targets your arch specifically. Start by sitting with both feet flat on the ground. Now, attempt to bring the sole of your foot closer to your heel by raising your arch while keeping your toes and heel on the ground. Aim to perform 10 arch lifts per set and five sets on each foot. This strengthens your foot’s arch, thereby reducing the discomfort associated with a flexible flat foot.

High-Arched Feet

High arches cause foot and ankle instability, which can result to pain and increased risk of ankle sprains.

If your father had flat feet, you must have inherited your high-arched feet from your mother. Mom was always enthusiastic about her arch. In any case, the higher the arch, the better, correct? Surely a result of all those years of ballet training.

Of course, that’s all a joke. A foot with an abnormally high arch can be just as problematic as flat feet. Where a flat foot has excessive motion, a high-arched foot has minimal. This will result in inadequate impact absorption when walking or running. This results in foot pain, medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints), and stress fractures.

Shin splints are irritating. Whether you are moving or at rest, you may experience a faint, throbbing ache on the inside of the lower leg bone. It might even be tender to the touch. And if you attempt to massage the area, you may sense a knot-like structure around the source of the discomfort. These are all indications of muscle inflammation. However, if you observe discoloration or edema, you may be suffering from a stress fracture. This indicates that you have developed tiny cracks in your muscle bones. Although both injuries are prevalent among individuals with high arches, they are preventable. We will simply have to exert a little more effort.

In this instance, we cannot rely solely on a custom orthotic. This foot type will not gain mobility from an orthotic. At best, it can redistribute pressures so that no single area is overloaded. An orthotic must be worn with the appropriate shoe. It is essential to wear a well-made neutral running shoe. It provides the natural shock absorption that your foot lacks.

Ingrown Toenails

You may not consider ingrown toenails to be a hereditary condition. True, some cases of ingrown toenails are caused by user error. You inadequately trim your toenails, resulting in an ingrown toenail. Would you think that other things are more likely to cause an ingrown toenail?

Too-wide toenails are the most common cause of ingrown toenails. That is all. You can’t blame bad nail clipping. You need not complain about the overly enthusiastic pedicurist. You were simply born that way. And here’s the thing: your ingrown toenails may never affect you. But someday they may.

The optimal time to have ingrown toenails checked is when they begin to become painful. But you should go before they become excessively inflamed or infected. The method for treating an ingrown toenail is simple. Additionally, recovery is a breeze. If it is infected, we are unable to treat it permanently. Wouldn’t a single procedure be preferable to multiple ones?

Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Not all cases of diabetes are hereditary. However, the majority of diabetics have a genetic predisposition.

Diabetes has severe effects on the limbs. They may experience numbness due to peripheral neuropathy. They may have inadequate vascular flow. And all diabetics have a diminished capacity for healing. When all of these factors are taken into account, the situation is quite undesirable. Which is worse? Diabetic foot ulcers may form.

A diabetic foot ulcer is a hole in the skin caused by excessive pressure on the bottom of the foot. It develops when your diabetes is poorly managed. It can also happen if your feet are numb and pressure builds up under your foot but you don’t feel it. It causes tissue breakdown and the development of a diabetic foot ulcer.

This genetic condition can be fought in two methods. First, you should look after yourself. If you have diabetes or pre-diabetes, you should consider this condition seriously. Do not simply take in your medication. You must also monitor your diet. It makes a difference. In addition, periodic diabetic foot exams must be done. How often depends on how well your diabetes is managed.

If you see yourself in any of these situations, it’s time to start undoing the effects of your genes. Call the Houston foot doctor at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center and we will schedule you for an immediate consultation. Remember that delaying until there is a problem will only make treatment more complicated in the future. It’s a cliche, but it’s true: prevention is better than cure.

I know that you like showing off your pretty nails. You could be interested in acrylic nails on toes if you often visit salons. After all, fingernails are often decorated with acrylic nails. Some salons may even apply them to your toes. Unfortunately, despite the fact that it could seem fantastic at the time, this can lead to serious issues. Getting acrylics on toes can actually lead to discomfort and infection.

Why Do You Need to Cover Your Toenails?

People may feel the urge to hide their natural toenail for a variety of reasons. The first possibility is that you have a toenail fungus infection. If so, the fungus may cause the appearance of thicker and yellow nails. The nail may break and possibly have an unpleasant smell for others.

What’s more? Toenail fungus takes a long time to disappear. The toenail must then grow out for at least nine months even after the infection has been treated. I mean, at that time window, women bear children. I recognize that it may seem too lengthy to refrain from wearing your favorite pair of open-toed shoes or a gorgeous coat of nail polish. And before that, I’m sure you’d want a toenail that looks prettier!

Toenail Trauma: Another Unrecognized Issue

Trauma is another reason for thick, discolored toenails. Our feet are often the site of trauma, including toe bumps, stubbed toes, and being stepped on. It’s possible that it’s not a severe trauma. In fact, anything as easy as repeatedly hitting your toe on the top or end of your shoe might lead to issues. Even while the damage is often just temporary, it is nevertheless possible for it to be permanent. And this may urge you to seek a means to cover the damage.

Running and Dancing: Yet Another Ugly Toe Issue

There are two types of athletes who often ask for help with their toenails. And among them are dancers and runners. Why do these athletes care so much about how their toenails look?

Here’s how it goes. Black toenails are common among runners, particularly those who run often over long distances. Their nails even come off sometimes. Now, avoiding this issue is really rather simple. But what if it’s too late? You may have to hide your unsightly runner’s toenails.

For many dancers, the same is true. Ballet and other en pointe dance-related sports may seriously harm your feet and nails. Fortunately, people are working on solutions to this issue that are particular to sports.

Scientifically developed toe shoes are already available and might protect your feet. They haven’t yet gained much acceptance, however. The toenails of dancers are still often broken. They therefore require assistance in having better-looking toenails. Does it include putting acrylic nail on toes? Let’s look more closely.

The Issue with Acrylic Nails

Acrylic nails are rigid and stiff. Putting your feet into shoes is a challenge even if this isn’t a problem for your fingernails. Why?

Actually, when you walk and make contact with shoes, your toenails will bend. And that prevents injuries and breakage. But without this flexibility, your nail would dig into your toe. You’ll be dealing with an ingrown toenail quite shortly. From then, the issue just gets worse.

It becomes considerably riskier to wear shoes if you have acrylic nails and your nail grows inward. Why? Well, even for a little period of time, the pressure from the shoe may lead to the development of a serious toe infection. The only way to recover after your nail becomes infected is to seek out an office treatment. The nail will need to be taken out, and the infection will need to be treated.

Now, how we would treat an ingrown toenail made of acrylic is the same as how we would treat an ingrown toenail made of natural nails. With a hard, synthetic nail, infection risk is even greater. In order to avoid these issues, it is thus preferable to avoid acrylic nails.

Keryflex Nail Restoration System: The Better Alternative

Before and after with Keryflex nail.

You may already be feeling hopeless. Your toenails don’t look as well as you would want. However, you’re not wanting to commit to getting infected, painful, and ingrown toenails. At our Houston podiatry office, we provide a remedy, so do not worry.

We use cutting-edge technology known as Keryflex nail restoration at our practice. Keryflex is essentially a resin made of keratin that I place over your own toenail. The treatment is painless and takes just a few minutes. After I’m done, Keryflex will give you an artificial nail that looks realistic and is healthy.

What makes this technique better than acrylics on toes? The answer is simple. Keryflex uses keratin. And keratin is the same component from which your natural nails are made. Because of this, a keratin nail is flexible as opposed to an acrylic nail. It will not therefore result in the same issues as acrylic nail on toes do.

Want to hear some more exciting news? With the Keryflex toenail, you may paint your nails and remove them after application. It’ll appear and feel exactly like your natural toenail as it properly heals below.

Men, by the way, often come in to have damaged or fungal nails repaired with a Keryflex toenail. particularly in the sandal season. We can create the nails without any sheen or paint, so no one will realize you have anything except your own toenails.

Find Out Whether Keryflex is Right for You

We have many pleased patients, both men and women. They often return so that Keryflex may be reapplied to their toenails. Some people only visit during the summer. Some appear just before a trip. Others visit us all year round for nail services. Many people who have tried acrylics on toes have found them to be uncomfortable or unsatisfactory. And this is the best choice for them.

If you’re interested in Keryflex toenail restoration, get in touch with the Houston foot doctor at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center.
Nowadays, almost every patient I see has a medical degree that Google awarded them. And, I’ll admit it, sometimes those late-night, fear-driven searches for symptoms lead to accurate, useful medical information. But other times, they don’t. If that happens, you either wind up believing you are about to die or trying home remedies for an illness you don’t truly have.

Therefore, as a web-savvy podiatrist, it is part of my job to provide you with accurate medical information while also helping to dispel myths about medicine. What is the subject today? An annoying condition that affects toes of all ages throughout the country, ingrown toenails. Let’s see if you can distinguish between ingrown toenail ‘facts’ and old wives’ (or husbands’) tales.

Why Do Ingrown Toenails Form?

Now let’s get started with my discussion of the causes of ingrown toenails. Your mission is to determine whether or not they are true before scrolling down to the bottom of the page to look at the answers.

No. 1: You’ll get ingrown toenails if you don’t clip your nails.

No. 2: You’ll get ingrown toenails if you don’t clip your nails correctly.

No. 3: Ingrown toenails may be avoided by cutting a “V” into the nail.

No. 4: Picking your toenails might result in ingrown toenails.

So, are you all set with your best guesses? Answers are here.

No. 1: FALSE. Most of the time, toenails don’t grow into the skin just because they are long. The majority of ingrown nails do, in fact, happen when the nail plate is too broad for the nail bed. That signifies that I’m more interested with the width of your toenails than the length of them.

This “false” response comes with a disclaimer, of course. The pressure of tight shoes may induce inflammation, and some people’s toenails do develop with a downward slope. When that happens, having long nails might result in them being lodged in the end of the toe, which will only become worse after you put on your shoes.

No. 2: Again, the answer is FALSE. We blame nail cutting for ingrown toenails, which is a myth. However, it’s possible that poor nail-cutting techniques might make ingrown nails worse. You should always cut your nails straight across. An ingrown nail may develop when the sides of your nails are angled back. However, this cutting answer is not universally applicable. If your nail is very curved, failing to round its corners may cause it to dig into your toe and create discomfort.

No. 3: Could this thought be any more false? I’m shocked that many still believe the groove in the nail relieves strain on the toe. If you think of a pressure grate on a bridge or road, the concept could make sense: the grate prevents pavement from breaking when temperature changes cause expansion and contraction. Unfortunately, the idea doesn’t apply to our toenails.

No. 4: True! True! True! A clipper is the best tool to use for trimming toenails. We’ve all done it at some point or another. However, doing it often causes the toenail to go too low on the sides, perhaps causing damage that might lead to an ingrown toenail. Check your answers, but be sure of one thing: you’d better have those clippers close at hand when it comes to toenail health. Do not pick.

How Do I Treat An Ingrown Toenail?

A red, swollen toe might mean you have an ingrown toenail

There’s one more thing I want you to be aware of, whether you aced our little exam or not. You should not even think of treating an ingrown toenail at home if you or your kid develops one. Bathroom surgery, as I like to refer to it, is unpleasant, unsanitary, and a certain way to get skin and nail infections.

The good news is that if you have an ingrown toenail and visit my Houston podiatrist office, I will gently numb the affected area and remove the toenail. The procedure is swift, secure, and almost painless (the worst part of the process is typically the sting of my numbing injection.)

If you have an ingrown toenail, Dr. Ejodamen Shobowale of DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center can help. No matter how many times you answered correctly on our simple quiz, home cures are not an option! Make a call to our office to make a quick appointment.

Your big toe carries roughly half of your weight each time you take a step. And any pain in your big toe might make it difficult to move about or to even get a decent night’s sleep.

There might be several causes for the discomfort in your big toe. Here are some typical reasons why it may be bothering you, as well as remedies that may help ease the discomfort.

The Wrong Shoes

If you often wear high heels, your feet may get sore. If the tips of those shoes are pointed, you will also feel it in your big toe. Even if you don’t wear stilettos, improper shoes may cause foot pain. Old shoes may cause toe discomfort if your shoe size has changed and you are unaware of it. This is particularly true if you’re pregnant, since your feet tend to become bigger. So, what do you do first to figure out why your big toe hurts? See if your shoes fit well.

Gout

One of the classic signs of gout is sharp, sudden pain in the big toe joint that occurs when you least expect it — sometimes even in the middle of the night. Pain and hypersensitivity may be so severe that simply laying a sheet over your toe might be painful.

Uric acid crystal formation in gout

While it is a kind of arthritis, gout is also a metabolic disorder caused by the body’s inability to adequately eliminate uric acid from the bloodstream. When uric acid levels get too high, sharp crystals may develop in the tissues around a joint, causing discomfort.

If you are prone to gout attacks, avoid purine-rich foods and drinks such as red and organ meats, shellfish, alcoholic drinks, and so on. Purines are broken down into uric acid during digestion and may cause gout occurrences. Make sure to drink plenty of water as well.

Bunions

Bunions aren’t only painful for your big toe. They literally displace the whole toe, causing a large lump to grow on the inside of the foot and the toe to drift toward the other toes.

A bunion is a deformity that will only get worse over time. The toe drifts farther out of position, the hump grows in size, the joint stiffens, and walking becomes more painful and difficult.

Because it takes time to grow, many individuals overlook their bunion until it becomes severe and painful. Early treatment may delay bunion progression and reduce discomfort. This may let you enjoy your favorite hobbies for longer while also delaying the need for surgery.

Osteoarthritis

Gout may be a huge pain in the toe, as we’ve previously described. Now we must consider different types of arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis. Your foot is particularly vulnerable to this problem since it has so many joints, and it is most often seen around the base of your big toe.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include inflammation, stiffness, and discomfort, particularly while pushing off the ground. Osteoarthritis, unlike gout symptoms, generally develops gradually. Unfortunately, osteoarthritis has no known treatment. However, we can alleviate your pain and manage your discomfort. Heat, ice, and, in the majority of cases, over-the-counter drugs are really beneficial.

Ingrown Toenail

Again, we find some familiar signs such as swelling, pain, and redness – the same things that you observe with other causes of big toe discomfort. However, there are some notable differences. If you have an ingrown toenail, the symptoms will most likely be concentrated in and around your nail bed. In addition, since your nail might puncture your skin as it digs in, infection in the area is also a possibility. So, if you have an ingrown toenail, you are more likely to get pus.

Ingrown toenail

You might be prone to ingrown toenails, particularly if you’ve had previous injuries to the area. This may be avoided with careful nail clipping. If you do get an ingrown toenail, take note that bathroom surgery will only make you more susceptible to infection. So, if your nail is digging into your skin, visit the Houston podiatry office. The foot doctor can numb and disinfect the area around your toenail, then, with a short and painless operation, she will fix the issue.

Turf Toe

Pain on the bottom of your big toe is one of the signs of this sports-related foot injury. It also causes inflammation and tenderness. It is caused by strain and is common among football and soccer players. Typically, it’s the result of hyperextending your toe past its intended range of motion. Rest, ice, and anti-inflammatories are usually the best treatments for this issue. We may also discuss appropriate footwear and preventive training methods.

Sesamoiditis

Behind the big toe are two tiny bones that assist the mobility of the big toe. These bones get inflamed when you balance on your toes, such as the case when you’re wearing high heels, and cause discomfort. Altering your footwear might help you find pain relief. Other lifestyle adjustments, as well as temporary anti-inflammatory treatments, might be considered.

There are several potential causes of big toe discomfort. And despite the fact that their symptoms are similar to one another, the underlying causes of each condition as well as the remedies for them are completely different. Why put yourself through the hassle of guessing and delaying or preventing a simple solution? Make an appointment with the foot doctor at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center. You’ll be able to acquire the diagnosis and treatment plan you need, and your big toe will be pain-free for a long time.
