How Important Is the Surface I Run On?

Running trail

Every step you take generates two forces: the force of the ground acting on your foot and the other of your foot striking the ground. As a result, your foot is subjected to pressure and it is why the type of running surface you use makes such a difference.

The larger the force returning to your lower extremity as you run on a firmer surface. Concrete and asphalt are tough surface materials. Gravel, grass, and a rubberized track are examples of mild surfaces. In Houston, we believe a surface similar to Memorial Park’s track to be ideal for running.

However, surfaces can be overly soft and uneven. Running on the beach puts more strain on your foot and ankle as you try to keep your balance in the sand. Our Houston roads, which are banked for drainage, are also a concern. It leads individuals running alongside the road to run on a slant, resulting in a major difference in the running surface.

Jogging should never be painful, regardless of the surface. If your feet are painful when you run, see Dr. Shobowale at DeNiel Foot & Ankle Center. We’ll get rid of your discomfort swiftly and take steps to make sure it doesn’t come back. Most significantly, you’ll be able to return to your favorite pastime: running!
