A Morton’s Neuroma can be treated with a variety of conservative methods. When conservative treatment fails to reduce the pain associated with the neuroma, surgery is reserved as a last resort. In my years as a Houston podiatrist, I estimate that about 30% of my neuroma patients require surgery.
Anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, sclerosing alcohol injections, and custom orthotics are all options for conservative treatment. When surgery is required, it is usually carried out successfully. Because the neuroma is surgically removed, this is the case. The related pain goes away rapidly after the inflamed portion of the nerve is removed.
