Should a Sprained Ankle Be Treated With Ice or Heat?

Icing is great for ankle sprains
Icing is great for ankle sprains

Ice should be applied to a sprained ankle. Despite the fact that heat feels better on the injured area, it should not be used. The same is true for all acute musculoskeletal injuries, regardless of location.

The blood arteries are constricted by ice, which helps to reduce swelling and inflammation. Heat, on the other hand, will only aggravate the inflammatory response. This can actually make the swelling and pain worse. If you sprain your ankle, immediately treat it with RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

If you have a sprained ankle, the foot and ankle specialist at DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center can examine you, prescribe exercises to strengthen your ankle, and recommend a treatment plan. Give her a call for your sports medicine and podiatry needs.
