What Causes Bunions on My Feet?

by admin

Bunions are caused by faulty mechanics. You inherit these mechanics in general, which is why your feet may resemble those of a parent or grandfather. The susceptibility to developing a bunion is what you inherit, not the bunion itself.

A bunion is just not a growth of bone on the side of the foot. It occurs when the first metatarsal bone rotates outward and bulges. The joint is forced to misalign, pushing the great toe towards the second toe. Every step you take adds to the cycle, causing the bunion to enlarge.

The mechanics that cause a bunion to occur can be negated if discovered early in its development. This is best accomplished with a custom orthotic. A custom orthotic, when properly built, can counteract the forces that create the bunion deformity. This can slow the progression of the bunion and possibly eliminate the need for future treatment, such as bunion surgery.

Do not wait until a bump on the side of your foot gets uncomfortable before treating it. Dr. Shobowale, Houston podiatrist, can perform a thorough foot examination and determine what may be done to prevent your bunion from worsening.
