Why Do Diabetics Have Issues With Their Feet?

Neuropathy is a complication of diabetes
Neuropathy is a complication of diabetes

Having a connection with a podiatrist is generally recommended for people with diabetes. Many people know someone who has had a section of their foot or possibly their full leg amputated due to diabetes. As a Houston foot specialist who specializes in diabetic foot issues, I’ve made it my personal mission to assist diabetics walk on both feet.

The feet are affected by three different problems caused by diabetes: poor circulation, reduced sensation, and a decreased ability to heal. If left undiagnosed and mistreated, these three conditions can lead to catastrophe. Poor circulation, often known as peripheral artery disease (PAD), restricts adequate blood flow to the feet. Peripheral neuropathy, or numbing of the nerves in the feet, diminishes the protective sense and lessens the probability that a person with diabetes may experience pain as a result of an injury. The reduced ability to heal can make a minor injury more complicated and infected, resulting in a diabetic foot ulcer and putting the limb at risk of amputation.

Every diabetic should establish a connection with a podiatrist. At DeNiel Foot and Ankle Center, we specialize in keeping diabetes patients walking and healthy in Houston, TX. Schedule a full diabetic foot examination with Dr. Ejodamen Shobowale, also fondly called Dr. Sho.
