As a Houston podiatrist, I despise having to advise my patients that they need to quit running for a while. It is not a decision I make lightly, but it is occasionally required. Several different types of foot pain can be handled when running. If I don’t think running during recuperation is a good idea, we’ll talk about other exercises you can perform safely.
Some injuries may need you to cease jogging and exercising immediately. Continued running during these periods aggravates the foot issue. I dealt with an Ironman triathlete who suffered a stress fracture in her foot, for example. I put her in a fracture boot and told her she couldn’t run for the next eight weeks. She couldn’t bear the thought of taking a break, so she kept running, resulting in a severe fracture that required foot surgery to repair. It resulted in a long recovery time and time away from running.
If you experience foot pain while running, seek medical attention immediately. Don’t worry, I won’t advise you not to run! Even if I do, it will only keep you from running for a shorter period than when your injury worsens. Make an appointment with Dr. Shobowale right now.
