How to Fix Thick Toenails

by admin
Fungal toenail invasion

Fixing thick toenails starts with addressing the root cause, which is often toenail fungus. To begin, keep your feet clean and dry, as fungi thrive in moist environments. Using an antifungal cream like terbinafine can help manage mild fungal infections. Apply it consistently, following the instructions for several weeks or even months, as toenail fungus is known for being stubborn.

In addition to using antifungal treatments, regularly trimming and filing the nails can help reduce thickness. Use a pair of sanitized nail clippers to carefully trim the nails straight across, and a nail file to smooth out rough edges. Filing the nail’s surface with a foot file or nail buffer can also help, but avoid over-thinning as this can weaken the nail.

If thick toenails are due to age, trauma, or a medical condition, you may benefit from other treatments. Soaking the nails in warm water before trimming can soften them, making it easier to manage thickness. For severe cases, professional treatments like laser therapy or oral antifungal medications may be more effective. Laser therapy targets the fungus within the nail, while oral medications can treat the infection from the inside.

Consulting a podiatrist is recommended for persistent thick toenails, as they can provide tailored advice and professional treatment options. Taking these steps can help improve the appearance and health of thick toenails.
