What Exactly Is Turf Toe?

Turf toe is a common injury to the big toe joints

The turf toe is a sprain of the toe joint caused by over-extension of the joint. The name comes from the fact that it is a common football injury that occurs frequently on artificial grass. It is not, however, limited to football.

When the joint is stretched, a turf toe can arise. A force pulling you backward will cause the joint to hyperextend suddenly. This one-time injury can lead to joint failure over time. This joint’s range of motion will become restricted and uncomfortable. A dorsal bunion is a spur that originates on the top of the metatarsal bone. It develops into arthritis, which further limits the joint and produces discomfort.

Turf toe is a degenerative condition that worsens with time and exertion. The sooner it is treated, the quicker it will improve and the pain managed. If you suspect you have a turf toe or another foot injury from sports, visit your Houston podiatrist right away for treatment.
