Flip-flops lack cushioning, support, protection, and functionality. On the other hand, they are easy to wear and convenient. Studies show that wearing flip-flops causes unpleasant foot conditions like foot pain, Pain in the balls of the feet, foot arch pain, develop gradually. Sudden flip-flop Injury such as stubbing your toe, broken toes, heel, and ankle pain may occur. Flip-flops offer minimal support for the foot, and the lack of cushioning to the arch and heel contributes to minimal shock absorption. The toes are also under pressure to grip and keep the shoes on, resulting in excessive gripping.
Flip-flops make one take shorter strides while walking, leading to the tightness of the Achilles that may result in Achilles tendinitis. Additionally, walking and standing on flip-flops for long causes minute cracks to the foot.
The lack of arch support leads to inflammation and plantar fasciitis. It is a painful foot condition when the plantar fascia is inflamed and irritated. The repetitive stress and tension on the tissue causing the feet to work excessively to keep the flip-flops in place caused inflammation and irritation.
The excessive bending of the toes to hold the flip-flops in place can lead to a hammertoe deformity. The toe can permanently bend and it gets worse over time if you do not consult a foot doctor.
The lack of shock absorption could cause stress fractures in the feet and ankle. The chances of injury such as heel pain from overuse of tendons and ligaments and sprained ankle are increased.
How the foot structure relates to flip-flops?
Flip-flops work for some people while others are disadvantages. A ‘normal’ foot tolerates periodic wearing of flip-flops. It means that the foot does not have a high arch or flatfoot deformity, so it is in good motion, and the activity level is low. Wearing flip-flops is the same as walking barefoot.
If you have foot structural problems, such as poor balance, numb feet, and deformities, flip-flops are dangerously unstable, do not support the feet, and do not protect the feet. A study showed that people with flat feet are more at risk of leg, ankle, and feet pain. The heels hit the ground less vertically force compared to other supportive shoes such as athletic shoes. Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Dr. Eji Shobowale from DeNiel Foot & Ankle Center.
