A blister forms in between layers of skin, the fluid fills the space. When hiking, you experience blisters on feet because of the repeated rubbing against the skin. Many hikers have come to accept that after a walk, you must experience some foot pain from friction blisters. However, did you know that blister care can prevent blisters from hiking? The crucial thing is blister treatment starts with managing friction to prevent blisters from forming.
Prevent blisters from forming with these simple steps:
Wear a proper fitting boot – It does not matter where you are walking a proper fitting boot is crucial. Get fitted by an expert for a new pair of boots and test them around and if you have any problems change them. Take the pair you are comfortable wearing.
Break in the boots – Breaking in can be harsh on your feet besides blisters may form. Start by testing the new pair of boots on short hikes and increase the distance gradually before taking long hikes. If you identify some problems such as discomfort or rubbing, experiment with solutions. Ensure that the boots fit well and are comfortable before you go on a long hike.
Lace-up well – It is a key in the prevention of blisters during hiking. Do not tie the laces too tight or too loose, so if your boots are slipping, tighten a bit, but if they are pinching, loosen up to avoid cutting circulation. Position your foot at the back of the shoe before working on the laces. When lacing up, if the foot is pushed forward when you start to walk the boot will loosen. When you hold the foot back, unwanted motion is reduced as the foot is in the right position.
Wear moisture-wicking socks – During a hike, your feet might become hot and sweaty. Cotton socks trap the moisture leaving the skin at the risk of getting blisters. Invest in moisture-wicking socks or high-quality wool socks.
Air your feet – When hiking, your feet might get hot and wet. The worst that can happen is forging forward with the hot and sweaty feet. Once you are hot and wet it is time to air your feet change your socks and take a snack break. Your feet will be grateful for this break.
Take care on uneven terrain – The feet are more likely to get blisters when the trail is uneven or when it keeps changing. Some people love the adrenaline rush of uneven trails, so, always pay close attention to each step you take on an uneven trail and take many breaks as you can.
Protect blisters – when you are on a long hike you might notice some pains. Listen to the feet and if a blister is starting to form, apply a blister patch where the shoe is rubbing against the skin to protect it.
